Hi
Where in the UK is the best place to get ammonia for fishless cycle. I have
looked in major supermarkets down the cleaning products aisle, and no
product specifically states ammonia, although I expect most contain the
stuff. Although nearly all products contain added bleach (no-no) or other
seemingly bad ingredients....
Any help would be appreciated...
thanks

I seem to recall someone mentioned Boots in the past - ask the
pharmacist.

I'm not sure about best, but I'm using ammonia sulphate from B&Q. 10g
disolved in a litre, then 10ml of this solution made up to another
litre. just add 1ml to the tank at a time and keep testing ammonia
until the level is arround 5mg/l
Another poster here (who knows more about chemistry) said that this
would not be as good as ammonium hydroxide, but I can't find a source
of that!
I'm not quite fishless cycling. I have taken the filter media out and
I'm trying to culture good bacteria in this in a separate bowl - I'm
using bacterlife to start off. My reason for this is that I need to
buy a fish on Wednesday for my daughter's birthday come what may, so I
didn't want to put ammonia in the tank in case it didn't work! I'm on
my 3rd day and I have nitrite and nitrate levels now - I've had to add
more ammonia. I think the fish will benefit from the bacteria I'm
adding.
Good luck
Philip

Jeyes make a product called Kleen Off (ammonia) which I bought from a
chemist @99p for a bottle which will do 50+ tanks..
the only problem with this is the concentration, but tested in 10 litres of
water and took 15 drops to get 5ppm so multiplied by tank vol to get correct
measure...this worked and have 5.5 ppm ammonia currently in tank
have 0 nitrIte and 0 NitrAte at the moment
Thanks for the advice..
best of luck

All else fails..... urine is supposed to work.
never tried it though, I prefer using filter material from another thank and
LOTS of cheap plants...
You don't need to cycle. plants use the ammonia direct...

Or let a piece of shrimp meat or beef heart decompose in the tank. Or
simply feed the tank as if there was a fish in it for a week or so.
Anyway, if you guys add pure ammonia, just remember that ammonia is
lethally toxic to fish at concentrations as low as 1 ppm.
