View Full Version : did algaefix kill my frogs?

Mary E. Hill
July 14th 04, 01:15 PM
I just treated my tank on Sunday with AlgaeFix - came in to work this
morning to find both frogs and the snail dead with a white fuzzy coating all
over them. Pretty upset about it! They were fine yesterday (or so it
looked).

Was it the chemical or what?? Had to be, huh? How else can you get rid of
algae besides chemicals? It's a 5 gallon tank w/light & filter and does get
some sunlight.

Any advise would be so welcome as I'd like to get it going again...

most if not all algae fix chemicals have copper in 'em and that surely would
have done your snail in... the frog, might have suffered from it too....

so sorry... #1 reason never to use chemicals.... IMO, the #1 reason
fish/snails/frogs die....

So if you have heavy, all-of-a-sudden algae, what would you do? I still have
the problem as that was my first dose and now the water is all cloudy so I
was going to treat it again now that they're gone...what do you recommend?

Thanks much,
Mary

Well, what kind of algae is it??What plants if any do you have in it?? Can
they be hand scrubbed and cleaned, or a quick dip to save them?? Is the
algae covering everything??

That's just for starters... I have had issues with algae, and sometimes, a
total breakdown and cleansing is the ONLY way... but unless you've got the
dreaded Black Brush Algae, you'll probably find that it's either lights,
nutrients or routine maintanance that is the problem.

Shooting in the dark here...
Lights - Are your bulbs old? Replacing can maintain the balance you 'once'
had.
Nutrients - If you have plants, you may be fertilizing too much, or too
little. I know, weird huh?
Maintaining - If you've not done regular water changes, and gravel
vacuumings, the algae will grow from the leftovers in the tank.

Also, seasonal changes in water supply could spark an outbreak, it did in
mine....

Start a new thread with your full tank parameters, explaining the problem,
and post it over in the plants group, and I'm sure the collective
knowledgebase will find the root of all evil... haha...

Links to identify Algae, I'm sure there are more....

Well, I don't want to post in the plants group, because I don't have any!
Or rather, I had one plastic one that I've now pitched because it's upper
half was covered in bright green beard (it appears to be) algae. That's the
only place it was growing - just on that one plant. It showed up quick -
like overnight it seemed.

I think it was a combination of sunlight (I'm going to move the tank to a
corner now w/no windows right next to it) and excess food, which doesn't
happen much, but it did earlier this week!

The bulb is relatively new - only had this tank since the end of May

Thanks, Red, for your time:)

Then there's hope for you after all... If you don't have plants, REAL
plants, then water changes are your best course, also very aggressive
vacuuming atleast one good time to get the algae that may be free, but sunk
to the bottom...

Then there ya have it.. that is the cause of the algae, over exposure to
intensive light... well, it could be the reason..

My bet would be the sunlight is your enemy... In my defense, I have a 65g
US, and it's sitting near a window with blinds.. it gets a thin layer of
algae daily, and I scrub it off once a week.... for this tank, I can't stick
my hand in it, the Red Devil that's in it, will bite my hand, hard. I let
it be, it doesn't bother me, I clean it once a week, and it's usually not
terrible, yet, it's hair algae, caused by too much light, and since the fish
is a very heavy eater, the algae just keeps growing.... I do weekly water
changes to combat his eating habits, and scrape the glass too

I hope some of this does you some good... remember, that's what this groups
for... helping.

Yep... it was the wife's idea... not a bad one though, it provides nite
lites, and aids in the relief effort.... like the waterfall effect...

I've had worse reputations... I can live with, "one with tank in

Do you ever come home after a heavy night and use the tank like a sink to=
