What are the weirdest (whatever your definition of that is) things
that you,
or any friends, have caught so far while fishing ?

The night hawk was weirder than the bat.
But I think the rattlesnake takes the cake.

Colin.
FYI...
Do you realize how many non "fishing" groups yopu added to your send
list?
The Marine and freshwater misc. groups are hobby fish keeping groups,
not fishing as in with a rod and reel.

Says who Tynk.you? If they want to fish in the aquariums thats their
business bitch. You just enjoy the attention in these groups and get
off on it. I can see now why you were always on Carol Gulleys back, it
was because she got the attention and left your skank ass out of the
picture, now your so enthralled with all this new found attention you
can not resist getting more. Your a deviat attention ho! Now go wash
that skanky smelling ass of yours its starting to permeate the
atmosphere.

This is easy to remember. I have "caught" exactly 4 Cottonmouths, although I
don't believe that "caught" is exactly the right word. The fact is that I
intentionally snagged each in the back with oversized Abu-Reflex inline
spinners by casting across their backs & then jerking hard when the lures
were just dangling past their backs, burying the hooks deep in them.

There is a small downside to such antics: First, I ran out of those prized
lures. Also, of course I always seemed to fall & skin myself up badly as I
ran away in terror. I can't really say that I eventually grew out of stupid
things like this... I just ran out of the lures.

Or did the "fisherman" catch the clap while fishing in TYNKS
pond...Thats what I would like to know.

Old TYNK wul dhave paid for those cotton mouths. She uses them for
super long dildoes. Of course she pays more fr a rattle snake as it
does nre for her with thse rattles. Yu know how hard it is to get off
once yur past a certain age like TYNK is, so therefore she needs her
toys to help, as well as getting her fudge packed....Anyone care to h
ep TYNK get off just send her an email or drop by her huse. She is
always willing to oblige.

A bloody great grass snake whilst spinning for perch. Hateful things, didn't
know it was a snake, last thing I thought it would be.I said to my mate,
''First eel of the season'', after that, all hell broke loose. Must have
been a funny sight, a 6ft bloke screaming like a girl whilst doing the
quickest highland fling anyone has seen. I now look before I hand land my
fish!

Morons, idiots, cretins, dumbasses, fools, imbeciles.....that sort of thing.

Wolfgang
who, personally, doesn't think there's anything particularly "weird" about
it.....but hesitates to impose his own quotidian standards on such an
erudite gathering as has been flushed out by this penetrating survey.

Two years ago my brother and I were fishing at Lake Thunderbird, near
Norman, Oklahoma. On a cast from the dam my brother snared a wayward
seagull in midair. The angry bird couldn't fly in that condition. My
brother had to real him in and untangle him from the line. What a mess.
The rest of us on shore just watched in a bemused amazement.

When it was all over the bird flew away, no doubt wondering what that was
all about.

I've caught clams a bunch of times while fishing in Ontario. I guess
the hook lands in their mouth and they grab on. Not much of a fight
though

Wierdest thing I ever caught was a bunch of about 50 sets of car keys on a
chain when fishing in a harbour.

This Spring I caught a 10" wild brown trout with the ring of a condom
wrapped around its "neck" area. Wore a nasty gouge on top and in the
throat area. Not really recognizing what it was at first I hurriedly
removed it, inspected and dropped it. I did get photos of the damage
caused, but wish I'd taken a photo before removing it.

Save the jokes, I've heard them all from flyfishing friends......

Not all

It seams you have caught a cross between a brown trout and an Alabama
white trout, I never knew they were in the same waters, and even if they
were, I didn't think they would/could cross breed.

The Alabama white trout is common around lakes where they have nightly
submarine races, they seam to hang around the beach areas after each
race, they can readily be caught with top water lures around these areas
early in the mornings after a race the night before. They are always
C&R, they can reach up to 12 inches in length, but have no fight in
them, and fishermen try to avoid hooking them.

Oh, goody.......I was beginning to think this one wouldn't be worth the
admission price.

Nah......just kidding. As long as the world is filled with people who,
without coercion from any outside agency, pick stupid names for themselves,
it is a safe bet that they have not yet plumbed the depths of their penchant
for self-immolation.

Off the end of Felixstowe pier several years ago a Paul Kerry rod and reel.
I guess someone cast and forgot to hang on! Used it for years, lovely rod.

Not a personal catch, but a true story...

Center Hill Lake in Tennessee and Lake Cumberland in Kentucky are
jeopardized today by ever-enlarging fissures in the limestone rock
formations surrounding the dams. Water rushing through the fissures and
caverns is dissolving the limestone. As the channels widen, the amount of
water available for hydro-generation decreases, and the foundations of the
dams are weakened.

Years ago, there was a dam across the Tennessee river below Chattanooga, not
too far above where Nickajack Dam is now. Hales Bar Dam was owned by the
Tennessee Electric Power Company (TEPCO). It, too, was built on limestone
bedrock. Apparently, small fissures connecting the water above and below the
dam, undetected at the time of construction, grew in the course of 20 to 30
years. In several places along the dam, such leakage flows produced visible
"boils" on the surface. Those boils were an excellent place to catch Sauger
(known in Tennessee back then as "jacks.")

TEPCO tried to plug the leaks by dumping barge loads of rocks and gravel on
the spots above the dam where some of the inlets of the fissures were
detectable, but that was ineffectual.

Undaunted, TEPCO assigned their best minds to solve the problem once and for
all. Sure enough, they came up with a novel solution.

Due to changes in ladies clothing styles in the late 1930's, merchandisers
found themselves with large stocks of lace-up corsets that they couldn't
sell. TEPCO got a boxcar load and put them on a barge at Chattanooga, along
with many coils of barbed wire. Positioning the barge above the holes
upstream of the dam, they cut the bindings on the coils of wire and dumped
them into the holes. Then they started throwing in corsets, weighted down
with rocks.

Brilliant! How could that approach not work!

Well, nature found a way. Corsets were pulled into the holes by the
currents, but the leaks were not significantly reduced. Large numbers of the
them swept through the holes, emerged in the boils, and drifted off
downstream. trotline fishermen for miles down the river found their hooks
loaded with corsets over the next few weeks.

Some great reads here, Joe.
My grandad worked for both TEPCO and then TVA at Hales Bar.

Anyway, hate to pick a bone, but when you say:
"Spoons cast into the turbulent water around the boils often were
struck by hickory shad. These river herring were full of bones and
universally regarded as inedible, but when hooked they ran and jumped,
providing some excitement when the jack fishing was slow. "

These are NOT hickory shad, but skipjack herring, as you more properly
suggest in the second sentence when you say "river herring". Our famous
"Tennessee Tarpon".

best, and thanks for the read,

You're right, MM. The last one I caught was while wading for brown trout on
the Caney Fork several miles below Center Hill. I'll go back and make that
change. Thanks for pointing it out.
