To all who responded:

Thank you. Unfortunately, (as predicted), two more of the fish
perished overnight and a third is laboring badly this morning. I
removed the dead fish, did a 70% water change, and am hoping for the
best.

You were all correct: Overstocked tank, mixed types, not cycled...

I didn't read up enough on keeping fish before starting this hobby.
My regret isn't that I didn't read, I can forgive myself for that. My
regret is that the consequence of not reading isn't just my own
ignorance but rather the death of several small fish that otherwise
could have survived longer.

I'm going to try and return the "excess" fish to the store. If not,
I'll do my best to find them a new home or different tank. If it
turns out to be too late and they continue falling, I'll have to start
over, this time after reading and researching extensively.

Once again, thank you all for your assistance.

Regards,

N

Your welcome, and good luck.

Just one thing to remember is almost everyone has had a disaster of some
sort over the years of fish keeping. The majority of these occur, in
engineering terms, due to operator error, and it makes you damn sure you
read up on what is happening in future. It's not an exact science, and the
biggest rule, never be afraid to ask.

Cheers

The main thing is to learn from your mistakes.

I've trusted fish shops and ended up with inappropriate fish, and
I've had loads of little fish die on me only to find my filter
wasn't working properly (oops) and the shop I bought from didn't
quarantine (they'd sell me fish on the day they arrived...)

Welcome to the hobby, and please come back and post here often
- it's a fairly friendly group (unlike a dog group I went to where
I asked a very straightforward question and was met with people
biting my head off and asking about my commitment - ouch!)

Best of luck,

I agree whole-heartedly with Flash. This is the most informative and
friendly group I've ever read. Even when beginners like me make the
usual mistakes, everyone tries to help, not berate them for being
stupid. I've learned so much here, and hopefully will avoid some
problems down the line because of the knowledge you all have shared.

I'm replenishing my tank now after an ammonia spike caused by being
over-zealous in cleaning the filter media. I've been patiently waiting
until the tank was stable again to begin putting in new fish. I'm going
to go for several small beginner fish for now and put my megalomaniacal
plans to expand to rest until I have a lot more experience.

One question... I had one zebra danio left from my tank crash and I just
bought three leopard danios to keep him company. My LFS told me that
all danios are compatible and would provide the needed company for each
other. Unfortunately, the zebra is chasing the newcomers all over the
tank, nipping at them. I'm afraid they'll get too stressed. This
puzzles me because I thought that danios are placid community tank fish
and this one seems pretty aggressive. Any ideas?

Thanks again!

In my experience with keeping danios (I've had them in every tank I've had,
without exception), all they do is chase each other (and some of the other
fish as well). I swear to god, they must be the crack addicts of the fishy
world. I'd only start to worry if you saw fin damage on the other danios,
which you *probably* never will...unless the damage is from something other
than the danios playing tag.

Established fish can be bossy about territory. Lots of plants, and
things to hide in help newcomers. I like Zebras, they do keep a tank
moving. Can't say I have seen fin nipping by mine, I only have two,
but fish can vary by individual.
