When you're favorite fish, a 14" pl*co, becomes too big for the tank he was
supposed to 'spend eternity' in, and has become too obnoxious, and almost
aggressive that he knocks over rocks, stirs up gravel, generally creates a
nuisance of himself....
I don't want to get rid of him to an LFS that won't care for him... he's
really just too big... the pond center says they don't want him that nobody
with a pond would want a beast that size...
He was one of my first fish, almost 3 years ago.... he's the one I couldn't
kill, now I don't want any bad things to happen....
Am I destined to keep this whale??

Could be that a new tank is in order my friend. A friend of mine keeps
his big boy in a bare bottom tank. That way it is easy to clean. Let
us know what you do.

A cup of flour, a gas grill, a 6 pack, and have some friends over for a BBQ?
-g.
p.s. - those guys get HUGE. A friend of my mothers has one about that size
in a tiny 20 gallon. Poor cat can barely turn around.

He forgot the garlic butter and the foil ;~). You could buy/make a
special tank (extra wide), or donate him to a pond in the southern
states, or drop him into a home-made above-ground pond
http://www.2cah.com/netmax/diy_projects/KoiPond/KoiPond.shtml but none of
these ideas might be ideal.
What I do with mine is they get moved to the 120g (18" x 60" base) with
other 'large' fish. You need a big tank to act as your 'collector'.

Honestly, there is a recipe on the net for them.. and clown knife fish
too.... surprised? they are a delicacy...
She nixed the idea of a bigger tank... and the local aquarium won't take him
because he's too small for their 'large breed' tank... minimum entry size
16", I told her, let him stretch out a bit, he may BE that big.. I measured
him at 14in a week ago... a bit more zuchinni and he may very well be 16" in
a few days...

I would take him if I knew he would survive the winter outside. You
could always get a simple tank going for him, something without much
decorations.

I'd love to have a pond myself, but winters are cold, not terribly, but the
'what ifs' are not worth risking...
the bigger tank has been nixed.... not allowed, the warden said so...

How cold? As long as the surface water keeps from freezing over
completely (and they sell gadgets for this purpose), goldfish and koi
will be fine.

We've been debating about whether or not we 'could' have one, but depth
could be the saving grace... if we got it deep enough, and our winters
aren't 'too cold' (read below 20F) then we could possibly supply heat to it
to maintain a 70ish temp... our winters vary so much from highs of 40 to
lows of 15, so... I don't think I could give a 300g pond enough heat to keep
him alive

300g? A man of your talents & enthusiasm would not dicker with a 300g
pond. On the pond scale, that's a puddle. Figure 800g minimum. Then
plan a 48" depth. At that depth, 800g is still only about 5' by 5'
surface (I can be an even worse influence in ponds than I am with
aquariums ;~)
Keep in mind that we are usually trying to figure out how to remove the
pleco from the pond (when they start attacking the fish) rather than
designing a pond *for* a pleco.
How about you make a garden wall out of glass blocks and put a liner
behind it. Then you can have a few hundred gallons above ground wrapping
around a garden (wardens like gardens ;~). That will house your plec
till it reaches the magical 16", and then later you will need to find
another fish to put in there (poor you ;~).

Instead of koi, I'd probably opt for aulonacara peacocks, let them breed,
and then the frog populus would serve a purpose... but in any case, I'd
probably skip the koi, get too big... My pl*co is that way now, too big for
anything....

For example, you have a garden wall, 2 feet high winding around your
house, garden etc. Select a section of the wall which is not in direct
southern exposure and close to a frequently used sitting/viewing area
(near a deck, playground, gazebo etc). Offset another wall about 2 feet
in front of the existing wall. You can use similar stone work and drop a
liner in, or glass blocks and only have a liner along the bottom and back
(this is a little trickier due to the liner/glass interface, and the
concrete (sand mix) holding the blocks together needs to be sealed. You
could do a combination, and only use a few glass blocks in the stonework
(depends on your underwater lighting & viewing aspirations).
You now have a 2' x 2' x length of above-ground pond doubling as a garden
wall. It's seasonal. In Canada, I wouldn't get much use out of it, but
you are further south than I am. Whatever goes in needs to be
winterized. Instead of Goldfish or Koi, you might do some type of North
or Central American cichlids. You can have terrestrial plant roots
dipping in to suck your nitrates out. If really ambitious, some
underwater pot lights, lilypads and a tiny fountain and/or waterfall ;~).
> NetMax, I must admit, you've been not only a driving force, but an

I've been an *expensive* influence, but at least this is a hobby which

She loves it... now I'm in trouble... I showed her the 'idea' and she hugged
my neck and said, "Yeah, I'm getting a pond!!" and I said, "You better get
him down here to build it...." she quickly asked "what's his number....?"
I said then that I'd do it, and she asked, "When are you starting?"
that was my last can 'o' worms.....

Uh oh? Was I bad? I told you I was bad. Today was my last day at the
fish store (I'd put in my notice a couple of weeks ago), so many future
hobbyists will be saved from my construction temptations (I know I left
at least 2 customers thinking about building an indoor/outdoor pond which
was connected by underwater patio doors ;~).

Moving on to what? I recall when I first ran across you ..... you mentioned
previous professional lives. I was unemployed at the time :-)
I've found a wonderful place (full of kids that age of my kids) who seem
respect a gray beaded geologist with as may years experience as they have
years.
Hope you are moving on to something just as enjoyable.

Thanks Flash, hi Robert, and the 2 weeks notice was for work, not the
newsgroup. I was on here for at least a year before I started working at
a fish store.
The new job is a confectionary company (I'll be an owner/operator), and
my first task is to automate the manufacturing. I've got almost
everything I own financed to broker the deal, and I'll be breaking even
in 7 years (or sooner) or I'll be bankrupt in two ;~). When I get home
from a hectic day, I'm just going to watch those dozen Mono argenteus
schooling around to relax. I heard fish add years to your life
expectancy. I believe it.

Gosh, I never figured you bail here or give up fish..... no one goes cold
turkey that fast ;-)
Good luck, let us know when you start mail order .... I've got a sweet
tooth.
My first experience with fish was years ago when I had rug rats. They sit
and watch the fish almost as much as they'd watch TV. A whole lot quieter
too ;-)
