View Full Version : vacation food for small fish tank?

I will be going on a weeks vacation and have a 2.5G tank with 2 small
fish in it. I purchased WARDLEY VACATION FOOD. it says each shell
will provide food for 15 average size fish for 10-14 days. I am
wondering if I can cut the shell in half and use it with my 2 small
fish while I am away for a week? also, it says to keep the light on
the tank on. Do I have to do this?

Thanks..

If possible, I would not use the vacation feeders.

You may be able to get by with a fasting during the vacation for your fish.
Feed them normally the day before you leave. Have a friend come by and feed
them once or twice the entire week while you're gone. The fish should do
fine. I usually only feed my fish once every two days and noticed a huge
improvement in their health (due to improved water quality) and activity
when I started this routine (over 2 years ago). During my vacations, I only
worry about feeding my fish if I'm gone for more than 4 days. If I am, I
will usually ask someone to come by halfway through my vacation and feed
each tank a premeasured amount of food.

I'm afraid that the vacation feeders will add unnecessary contaminates to
your small tank while you're away. You may come home to a worse condition
than when you left due to the excess material that dissolved while you were
away.

Something to think about.

Seconded everything Justin said - they are mainly ash / plaster of
paris, with small bits of food in. Some fish will pester the food
non stop and eat it all, some won't get any - and the crud will be
excessive, not something you want in such a small tank.

In any case - you should test whatever food you intend to leave,
while you are present and can intervene. That's how I found that
not all fish got any food...

Nix your idea and consider this... Feed them very well the week before you
leave, and then do nothing until you get back... you'll be surprised to find
your wet pets just fine....

I travel all the time myself and when we leave for a week or two I don't
feed my fish. They will not be harmed by going without for a few days.

If you find a friend to help, make sure he/she understands *exactly*
how much food the fish are to get and how often. When I had friends
come over I always showed them less than I would feed, just to be on
the safe side.

well I dont have anyone to come over and feed them. I al afraid they
will die without food for a whole week. anything else I can do or can
I cut the vacation feeder smaller then it is to make it work for 2
small fish for a week?

I doubt they will die in a week...

You could ask a neighbour though, you might like them when you
get to know them? :)

How about a co-worker? Do you have a Veterinarian you use? They may
know a reliable pet sitter (or even one of their techs) who can come
over once and feed them. You'd really need only one visit from
someone.

How about trusting what 10 people say? That worked for me the first time I
went on vacation.... They said, feed well, go on vacation, come back and
enjoy your fish, you'll be surprised how smart the people here are... the
collective knowledgebase must be well over 200 years of experience... NetMax
probably makes up for 90% of that, not to say, he's 180years old....
hahaha...

Discard the Wardley. Your fish are very likely to do just fine for 7 days.

The only vacation food I suggest is Tetra vacation sticks. These are great.

What ever you decide, do *not* choose to use that vacation feeder. You may end
up killing your fish.
It will release crap into your tank that shouldn't be in there. It will screw
up your pH and that right there can put your fish into pH shock, and then
death.
It will pollute the water.
It's mostly plaster anyway. Not something you would feed your fish, right?!?!
Your fish can go a lot longer than a week without food. It actually takes a
while to starve a fish to death that is in good health.
If you're not ok with leaving them without food for a week's time, get somebody
to feed them for you. It's only a 2 1/2g tank right...if so, it's easy to move
if the person can't come to your house to feed them. = )
OUt of curiosity, what type of fish are these?
