View Full Version : My Keyhole Cichilds Just Spawned!

I came home from work today, and there are a bunch of beige/grey eggs on the
slate in the 10 gallon tank! I just moved these guys into the tank just 3
weeks ago, getting them out of my 75 gallon which they shared with 5 large
severums, 8 skirt tetras, 4 corries, and a few ottos. The severums were
dominating the tank, and the keyholes were just hiding all the time, so I
thought I'd move them (I only have 2 of them) to a "spare" 10 gallon that I
had. Oddly, they seemed just as timid in their own tank as they did with
all the other bigger fish that were with them when they were in the 75. I
didn't do anything in particular to try induce them to spawn, such as adding
distilled water, cranking the temperature, feeding live bloodworms, nothing!
Well, ok, maybe I paid extra attention to the pH when setting up the tank,
and they got a few extra water changes during the first 2 weeks until it got
established (I set the pH to about 6.5 in the 10 gallon, vs 7.2+ in the 75).
And I've got fairly hard well water here, ~12-15dH. This is so cool! Just
wanted to share the joy with the group. I'm not even sure that I've got a
pair yet, every time I walk into the room, they go and hide, so it's quite
possible I have 2 females, only time will tell I guess...

Brad

I just love keyholes. I have a pair myself and unlike yours, are not
shy. Mine live with festivums, angels, discus, corys and a couple
loaches and all is well. Now that yours are not being picked on they
should come around and you will find that they are a friendly fish.

Congrats on the spawn too!!!! It may take them a few tries, but once
they get it down, nothing will stop them.

You might want to add some dither fish to make them less shy. I would try
danios, or some other small quick fish.
