View Full Version : marble snails

Greetings,
I recieved my order of assorted aquatic plants yesterday. Included in
the order were two marble snails. I placed them in the tank last
night, along with the plants, but since then they have not moved at
all - even overnight while the lights were out. Could they have died
during shipping, or are they just a little spooked and won't come out
of shell for a day or so? Many thanks.

I never head of marble snails? Are they apple snails? this site has
pictures. http://www.applesnail.net
I have around 20 applesnails adults. And sometimes they don't move for a
few days. And sometimes they have been dead. If you just got them they
might be recovering from the trip.

If you pick one of them up and uses your nose to detect if there is
any smell, you will have the answer.
Any dead animal will start smelling very fast at tropical water
temperatures.

Yeah, did that today, and my suspicions were correct. Immediately threw them
out. I don't understand why of all things snails would die. I thought they
could survive when nothing else would. But it wasn't anything I did since
they came that way. Oh well...I'm going to ask for some more snails from the
online vendor. Thanks.

I've had apple snails, and found it hard to figure out just what it takes to
make them survive and thrive. I have 5 tanks. In 3 of them they don't
survive 3 days, in the other 2 they thrive. I can't figure out what the
difference could be. All the tanks have good filtration and identical water
quality readings. They all have wood and live plants..... beats me :)

In the tanks where they DO NOT thrive, do you have African dwarf frogs?
Mine eat snails.... any kind, any size....

Wow - that's strange! I've got three dwarf frogs at home with 3 large snails
and they just completely ignore them (so far anyway!). Maybe it's because
the snails are bigger than the frogs:)

My frogs try without success to eat my snails...they just end up bouncing
off the shells. I did notice a few days ago that my *ghost shrimp* were
plucking baby snails out of the gravel and sucking them dry. I had never
heard of that before, so it was kind of strange to watch.

I have no frogs. I have clown loaches in the larges tank, but they are not
the reason why the snails die in there. They are not eaten, they just start
floating after a day or so, then die. In the other two tanks where they do
not survive, there are no snail eaters - same thing happen there. Really
weird, but true I assure you :)
I don't have mystery snails any in any tank at the moment, as the two tanks
where they do live I now have fish I I'm trying to breed, and I do not trust
the snails 100% not to eat the eggs or fry. I know they're not supposed to,
I just don't trust them :)

I agree with McEve...in my 10 gallon tank the snails just thrive! One
apple snail I've had for over a year just died, his shell is almost
the width of my fist! My BF got me a pinpoint one for a X-Mas gift
this past year and she is on her way to becomming huge, as is the
ramshorn I added about a year ago. I think access to plenty of food
may be the reason, maybe even a peaceful tank where the fish don't
stress them out provides a longer life. Snails are mysterious
creatures, I just love watching them.

One more thing I just thought of...all the tests kits make it a point
to say that nitrates should be kept as low as possible when keeping
inverts, perhaps that factors in?

In my situation, they must have died on the trip in the mail. Anyways, we'll
see how they do in the next order. I requested some more today, and they
obliged. I'll keep my fingers crossed. :-)

Wood softens the water and is bad for snails, you water has to be
harder. there has to be at leat a 2 to 3 inch drop at the water line.
The foods has to be high in calcium. I use Ken't liquid calcium at half
does and feed them high calcium veggies.

Update all,
I recieved two more marble snails from the online vendor today, and they're
doing great. They took off as soon as I added them to the tank!
