Can anyone advise as to the suitability of putting a betta in a tank
together with Zebra Danios and Neon Tetras?

I'd quite like one but don't want anyone to get killed!

Thanks.

i think zebra danios might nip at the bettas fins and stess him out. i
however have 4 neon tetras and 3 white cloud minnows in with one of my male
bettas in a aquarium and everyone gets along fine. it also depends on the
betta's personality, some bettas are pretty mellow but others are terrors of
the deep and prefer to live alone. just have another tank or bowl for the
betta ready if things dont work out with the other fish.

I didn't have a problem. I have a 45 gallon, we had 4 2inch+ angel
fish, 10 danios at the top, swordtails and a variety of others.
Other than the angel fish being aggressive to everyone, the only other
anxeity were the male sword tails to each other....

The Betta has beeing doing fine.... thriving seems to do well with
everyone....

I have had female Bettas in with both Zebra and Leopard Danios and
never had a problem. I really think it depends on the fishs'
personalities.

Hi there.
The one being "killed" isn't always the other fish. Most of the time a male
Betta is the one being harrassed.
Neons are one of the more safer Tetras to house with Bettas, just make sure
they're not the super tiny ones that would be expensive snacks for any
predatory fish (Bettas). Danios, on the other hand, may be nippy towards a male
Betta. I've had many folks reply back that they've nipped up and stressed a
male Betta. However, female Bettas seem to be ok...no long fins to make pretty
targets of.

Many thanks for your contributions.

I have a reserve tank in case things don't work out!

Well, I have a red betta together with (mostly sci names):
Trichogaster Leeri;
Red neons;
Angel Fishes;
Rasboras;
Platys;
Clown Botias; etc
and it never bothered them. It likes to be in the top of the aquarium
between some leaves, and the fish behaves like a gentleman. Maybe some day
it will become "unsocial", since it has a big fighting fame... but I think
the only thing that triggers its violence is the presence of another betta.

I have had one in my mixed tank and he never bothered any other fish, the
fighting part of the name only comes out with two males in the same tank

Hi all,

Well I got a betta, and for now have put him in a tank on his own to see how
he gets on.

I've had him a few days, and since he's been in the tank, he's seemed very
lethargic and has spent most of the time in the little model castle that's
in the tank.

Is this normal for a betta new to a tank, so am I doing something wrong?

That's the best way to handle most situations with fish. = )
If it doesn't work out..use the other tank.
Then, don't forget to replace the "reserve" tank..you know..just in case it
happens next week. = )~

Hi there Kevin.
Sometimes it's not another male Betta that brings out the fight in a male,
sometimes it can be the weirdest reason.
Bettas are thinking fish. They have brains and know how to use them.
They have likes and dislikes...just like you do.
I have had males that a certain color will bring on fight mode, certain types
of fish, a stranger looking at them, etc.

Acting lethargic is not good.
A hiding Betta that has only been with you for 3 days is pretty normal. It
simply doesn't know you yet.
A lethargic, hiding, Betta is a red flag.
It could be anything from the tank's temp to water chemistry to disease.
Can you give me some more details about the actual fish and his tank.
Size of tank?
How long the tank's been set up?
Temp?
Water change schedule?
Fish's body:
Anything on it..beit a white dot (Ich)-a parasite hanging off of it (Anchor
worm), white fuzzy stuff (Fungus), etc.
How's his coloring? Is it bright or faded?
Can you see horizontal bars down his side?
Are his fins clamped (held together but not stuck..can open them), or seem to
be glued together?
Any little detail can help.
Also.....do you make sure your hands are clean before doing anything with the
tank?
Also, has there been anything sprayed into the air in the same room as the fish
(such as air freshners, hair spray, smoke, etc)?

Mine was pretty shy in the 1st week, and is still not much seen as are my
Angels. But it will come out eventually.

He spent most of the day yesterday inside the castle. Got home this evening
to find him out and about. I wondered if he'd come out when he got hungry!

Yeah, everything seems fine now.

Cheers.

Just one other thing (and I think I probably already know the answer to
this) - would it be inadvisable to put a few minnows in with the Betta? It
is a 5 U.S. gallon tank.

Thanks.

Thanks for that.

I won't bother typing in more info, since as I said in my last post, he's OK
now - stopped hiding. Perhaps it was simply shyness.

Hi All,
Yep I have had Betta's in a tank with other fish no problems. The only
thing is they do not like it when the PH level is messed around with.
I live in Australia and the highest PH level in ordinary tap water is
7.5. Which is high but not high enough where the fish won't eventually
adapt. So I do not add any PH additives to the water and all my fish
are fine. I only put in water Ager when I change a 1/4 of the tanks
water, this is so the clorine gets killed.
I recently had Zebra Danios, and found them to be quite noisy. They do
get on with other fish, but will bite/nip if left to long without a
feed.
At the moment I have Neons, the beautiful Rummy nose tetra's, Guppy's,
Gourami's and a couple of sucking fish, all in a 120litre tank. They
all get along no one is bossy and all are great schooling fish.
Cheers
