As a young boy I used to keep a couple of goldfish in what might now be
described as an 'organic' tank.
I used no additives beyond infrequent water changes and more frequent food.
I don't know the fish specifics; they were won in a fair.
The tank had an air driven sponge and some elodea and another unknown plant.
It was not artificially lit.
It also had other inhabitants:
little bugs (perhaps daphnia and or gammarus shrimp)
A snail
big bugs (probably Asellus)
The tap water was 'hard' South-East English stuff.
This set up lasted to my teens, when I discovered music & girls. My parents
let me start a pond and the whole tank lived outside for years.
I would like to try and recreate the tank but with a little more knowledge.
Anyone out there got any experience or advice?
Not too sure if Asellus would like an undergravel filter.
I would like to breed the UKs endangered white clawed crayfish but that may
have to be after little more experience with this 'organic 'setup. I may try
sticklebacks.
I now live with Scottish soft tapwater.
