Had two red comets in a tank one of them has died. Will the one
remaining fish be ok or should we get a replacement for the one that
died? I don't want to put another goldfish in if it is at all possible
as the tank is only 5 gallons but if the remaining fish is going to
"pine"...

This is a conundrum between goldfishs' natural communal drive and space to
live. I go for not replacing the fish and getting a bigger thank ASAP and
adding another. My experience (I keep goldfish) is that they most
definately grow fond of one another...but I have Orandas and not comets.

I would get at least a 20g tank and then buy another goldfish to keep him
company. Goldfish are not small fish. Commets can reach almost a foot in
length when healthy and well care for.

I agree that you need a bigger tank for comets as than get large and a
5 gallon is not adequate for the long term health for even one comet.
Also good filtration is a must for goldfish as they can be 'dirty'.

Perhaps this fishes owner needs to be locked in a closet for a bit
just to see how that fish feels...Either get rid of that one last
comet or buy a properly sized tank and correct filtration for the
fish...........I'd flush a comet if it was doomed to live indoors ina
properly sized tank...At the minimum carry it back to the LFS if
buying larger and better filtration is an issue, and NO your present
filtration in all reality will not work on a larger tank and you need
a much , and thats MUCH MUCH larger tank , not next size up tank!

So irresponsible that he realises he doesn't know and asks for advice.
Never confuse being uneducated with being ignorant/irresponsible.

Touch of history:- Tank was bought three years ago, the box it came in
had a picture of three or four Goldfish living perfectly happily in that
size tank. So thought that size was adequate for two Goldfish. Have
since found out that Goldfish need about 10 gallons each .
Without knowing any different I took the manufacturers claims at face
value (o.k. it was probably legal as it was a picture not words; still
lying in my book).

Don't think taking the fish back is an option as we have had it two
years. We will not be getting a bigger tank so should I euthanise or
just let the remaining fish see out its days.

If you can't get a larger tank I wouldn't get another goldfish. By 2 years
of age he should be around 8" long if well fed and cared for. That means
plenty of partial water changes and a good variety of food.
