View Full Version : Low maintenance tanganykan aquarium

Hi, my tank is only a 20 gallon size,
and I have 5 tanganykan cichlids and 5 red crabs.
I never changed the water, I never syphoon the bottom to clean it,
because I don't feed them very often.
I only add new tap water due to evaporation, but I cover all my
holes, so the evaporation occurs very slowly.
I have not changed water since October of 2000.
I feed my fish , just cichlid flakes, once a month.
I cover my tank with all sides with paper or blanket so
it will not create algae on the walls.
Also under dark conditions, fishes of the cichlid genre,
are less active at night than day.
Everynight when I am home, I just appreciate the beautiful
peaceful and tranquility of colorful tanganykan cichlids
comingling with red crabs. My fishes are not much bigger than
my red crabs of course.

thats a great bloody idea! Why didn't I think of that!!! lets all STARVE our
fish, DEPRIVE them of LIGHT, and let the stew in their own FILTH, so we
don't have to do any freakin Water Changes! Lazy freak...
BTW, that torpid state that you refer to as peaceful and tranquil, is also
commonly known as STARVATION!
Are you still sexually molesting them too btw?

Jesus Christ!
What an outrage - you apparently have no idea what you're doin' to the
fish! I'm appalled by your obvious animal abuse! Someone ought to lock
you up and make you starve for weeks and weeks, then maybe you realize
how your behaviour affect those poor animals.
Not to mention the fact that you're enough of an idiot to describe your
misdeeds in a usenet posting...
You really should get some professional help!

Every year I try to post this message to describe to the world a new approach
on how to keep a healthy low maintenance aquarium.
The majority of the posts here is about improper care of fish, due to
overfeeding and or too much light or water changes causing ph and water
variations. I do not even use a thermostat in my aquarium.
How do you know if the fish are hungry or starved? You don't know.
Fish do not have emotions. They are animal predators, unlike
domesticated cat and dogs.
From my aquarium, it is clean shiny, colorful, and still swimming around.

You are a god damned freak... just because they can "survive a month without
food, doesn't mean thats all they need to eat. I could probably keep you
alive in my closet by feeding you every week or so too. I don't think you'd
be very healthy though... Idiot

I remember.... I'd call him a bottom feeding scum sucker, but It would just
insult pleco's by association...

Hey, Clyde, my spiny monster pleco, doesn't like that because he doesn't
suck scum (Algae isn't scum).... and he only bottomfeeds because I put the
food there!!! Get your facts straight!!!

I was refering to chip, who seems to have a tendency to masturbate in his
fish tank and doesn't really understands the intricate details involved in
this hobby.
1: In point of fact, aside from eating algae, pleco's are opportunistic
scavengers. They eat bits of food etc that is missed by other fish... Last
time I checked, gravity tends to send these bits of food to the bottom,
which is where they eat it from.... Hence the term bottom feeder... I would
also like to mention that in their natural habitat, there are no glass walls
for them to eat algae off of... They stick to the bottom, where they can
blend into the background and also rapidly seek shelter in case of danger...
.....
2: Do a search on Merriam Webster Online Dictionary for the term "scum"...
One of the entries that pops up is as follows:
"pond scum
Function: noun
Date: circa 1890
1 : SPIROGYRA; also : any of various related algae
2 : a mass of tangled algal filaments in stagnant waters"
Buy Clyde a copy of a Dictionary or better yet, Get your own facts straight
and stop talking to your fish.....

Probably younger then you, but then I guess in mental ability a 2 year old
would be considered old to a troll like you... Do the world and your fish a
favor, and fall down the stairs or something... And oh, for a guy who has to
resort to beating the meat into his cichlid tank, you sure got a lot to
say... Get a girlfriend, if you can find one that'll date inbred
neanderthals like you...

I have a 55 gallon aquarium with an Oscar, a Green Terror, a Blue Acara, a
Jaguar Cichlid, 2 orange finned botia, and a Trinidad Pl*co, and I also have
not changed the water in a LONG time (almost 2 years). I use an undergravel
filter system, two Penguin 330 biowheels, and of course the Pl*co and Botia
to keep the tank clean, clear, and algea free. I feed them 2 times a day
with flakes and food sticks, and once every two weeks, I give them feeder
fish. I try to limit the light time to 9 hours a day, but I am not too anal
about it. They all get along real well, and the water is good enough to
drink......hmmmm fish water....

Jim I disagree on one point... I think he should drink the water... Lots of
it.. If its good for his fish, it should be good for him! After all what
could possibly be wrong w/ a tank full of water thats been collecting
excrement and waste for 2 solid years?

I once had an aquarium where I didn't change the water for at least 6
months. It had a few cichlids and a catfish in it. All of the fish were
healthy and beautiful.
This particular 26 gallon tank was lit by 96 watts of full spectrum
lighting for about 16 hours out of each day. I ripped out large bunches of
floating plants every week or so. No algae grew in this tank. During this
time I tested nitrate levels of < 5 ppm. I was able to drive
photosynthesis such that the nitrogen content of the regular, daily
feedings was exported as plant biomass right into my compost pile.
I wonder if any of the other "low maintenance" fans in this thread have
ever bothered to test for nitrate or even understand its role in tank
chemistry and health...?
Summer is indeed a slow time in r.a.f.cichlids.
Cheers to all who view their aquariums as a microcosm of life rather than
as another mindless gratification like their TV set.

I'm sure your brother doesn't want to be called your girlfriend...
Dip, you cannot expect to breeze thru this after saying what you said...
It's like going to a harley group, and saying that American made bikes suck,
or in a Ford group and saying that Chevy Rules... you'll get blown out of
the water....
Doing so, illustrates one of two things... poster is a child looking for
attention or someone who has no basic level of cognitive reasoning. Either
way, you've wasted your own, as well as all of our time. There are no rules
to fishkeeping, you can do whatever floats your boat... but as a majority,
you've been asked to leave because of the content of your post. Nobody
that's been here will forget your post if that makes you happy... albeit
gross, stupid, arrogant, selfish, did I say stupid? New people come here
looking for advice and if/when they read your post, will likely be guided in
the wrong direction for success, just as you have been.... You cannot
convince anyone here that you have more than a 6th grade education... you
may very well have graduated high school, but that doesn't make you
intelligent... An intelligent person would have compassion for other life
forms, respect for other people and for their opinions. You have neither,
therefore you are in no possible way, shape, fashion or form, an intelligent
person. Smart requires you to be witty, somewhat tender, less intuitive but
saavy. You've proven that you are not witty, in no way are you tender,
intuitive is out of the question, and you'll have to look saavy up in a
dictionary, because again, you couldn't be saavy if you tried... Challenged,
or mentally retarded requires lower functioning brain capacity, the
inability to process simple logic, simple instructions, and not being able
to grasp simple concepts. By not taking specific care of OUR friends in
your tank, you've shown your lack of grasping even the smallest of concepts,
and by your first post, you gave examples of how you can't process simple
logic, and by your return in here, shows lowered brain capacity.
As I'm almost positive, this is all lost on you, I only took the time to
illustrate, while I do not know you, I would certainly smack you if I knew
you, and if I knew you, I wouldn't like you. It's ONLY for your attitude,
your actions toward others, your fish, and your fellow hobbyists, who were
here to help you if and when you needed them. Instead you came in to their
place, and took a huge **** on their coffee table. I think you know how bad
that sucks. Remember, this isn't such a large planet anymore... Someday,
what goes around, will come around to you. It may very well have built up,
and may have brought along all the baggage you've accumulated over the years
of your adolescence. I'm also sure that when it comes back around, you'll
look back and see all the negative things, negative ways you've affected
others, and all that negativity will come crashing down on you, crushing
what small, brittle little heart you may or may not still have, and then
you'll remember... you've been wrong about everything, you've ever known, in
your whole life....
My advice, Wake up before you die... otherwise, you're already dead.

for the governorship?
What is wrong with Penthouse? Sorry I did not know you prefer Playgirl.

Sorry loser, no button pushed, except the pity button... for you to be so
lost, and clueless, is sad....
Maybe someday, you'll see what we all see... anger, sadness, all wrapped in
a bad attitude, with a smidge of resentment, and some type of betrayal,
you're probably adopted, and resent your mother, and all females. I would
also venture a guess that you are catholic if not atheist, why? no specific
reason....just a hunch....
Welcome to my "Blocked Senders List"... bu-bye.....

Thank you Jim, for your vote of confidence. I know it comes too late, but it
means a lot coming from one so knowledgeable.

In point of fact, apart from eating algae, sucker fish is the opportunity scavengers. And other bits of food they eat is the other fish missed the last time I checked, gravity position at the bottom of these foods often, This is their food, So, short-term bottom feeder. I will also mention that in its natural habitat, there is no glass curtain wall they eat the algae off in the end ... they insist on the Ministry, where they can into the background, and the case of asylum seekers out of danger quickly.
