I am about to get a water purification system for my house which uses
a KDF-55 pre-filter. Anyone out here have any experience with this?
I've searched old forums, but no joy. I don't want to ask the company
rep about it; they'd just probably shoot me a line anyway...

Did you ask what is inside KDF-55 "prefilter"?
And how is the main filter working?
Such systems are usualy water softener systems...
Just to remove large rust particles and calcium hardness.

For reef tanks we usualy use multi-stage filters with main
stage being reverse-osmosis (RO) and the last stage using
ion-exchange resins (called de-ionisator, DI) further polishing
water coming out from the RO filter. As a result we receive
pure water, cleaner than distilled water you can get in the
grocery stores.

Rather than whole-house purification system we use
such RO/DI filters just for drinking water and to fill up
tanks for mixing sal****er.

Piece of **** reallay. Check out filtersdirect.com and get a decent
rodi unit and not get ****ed inthe process. Its hard to beat a unit
with clear housings..........solid color housing leave al ot to be
desired............
Filters Direct has them for $122.00 delivered with your choice of
membrane capacity from 35 to 100 gpd and all american made as well.,
Its comonly called Water General........do an Ebay search, then call
and ask for Oscar...............and BTW the filter direct Water
General is made by Honeywell Systems.Aquatechnics division...far from
being a piece of junk!

This just removes dirt and other particles.

This is an RO unit using "Thin Film composite"
abbreviated as "TFC" So if you do a search on the
different types of membranes you will see the
advantages and disadvantages of the different
membranes. Kent Marine (http://kentmarine.com) has
documented a lot of good information on the
different types of membranes.


The reason that the system has other filters before
the RO is just like with any RO unit, if you don't
filter out the bigger stuff, it will quickly clog
the membrane, and some membranes will be damaged by
chlorine if it is not removed. Your homework
assignment is to read up on the different types of
RO membranes and become familiar with the
differences :-)
