View Full Version : Expensive bettas

OK, I looked them up. They're crowns and deltas. ;-) The deltas are the
ones selling for $12.99. The crowns are half that where I live. The
regular bettas run $3.99 these days, the females $1.99.

The local Petco here has some rare bettas . The wife and I was looking
at them today. There are updside down fuzzys, all over fuzzies, and
half fuzzies, finless fuzzies and the new color bleached out and
fuzzy...Out of a total of 29 contianers of Bettas both crowns, males
and females, there was a grand total of 21 dead betta, with the
remaining 8 in pityfull condition.But , and I repeat.BUT the lcerk
said no problem as they are getting more in on Thursday if there was
none there that suited us today.....Some one really needs to burn that
Petco manager big time along with Petco for allowing such crap as
thjis to happen. SOmetimes its worst than Wally World when it comes to
fuzzy upside down and half there fish. I just love it when yu ask
them if they ever check the tanks and they say yea,k they check em
all day long........yet there is dead half eaten bodies inthere all
the time............I guess the correct question in stead of checking
the tanks is do yuou ever clean the dead and sick bodies out of the
tanks or just olet them there to create new breeds and provide
nutrition to the other tank residents.

If you think these are expensive, try a betta breeder. $90+ is common for
*potential* show specimens.

:-O OMG! That is sickening. The last place here that specialized in fuzzy
fish with that peculiar stench of decay closed their pet dept. some months
ago.

Doesn't that just tick you off bigtime? They'll probably just dump the
decomposing departed out and pour the new ones in the same foul containers.

We have (teenage) clerks like that at one of the stores here. I think only
the manager can tell the difference between the dead, the almost dead but
already fuzzy, the near dead gasping their last and the already skeletal
from the few that are still breathing.

LOL!!!! I know it's not funny but that had me laughing........ :-D

>That's truly sad.
I hope you guys pointed out all the corpses to the manager before
leaving.
You should (if you haven't already) email the corp's customer service
at PetCo.com.
Explain what you saw and when.
They *do* get in touch with the store's manager about any problems a
customer has with a certain PetCo.
I did this constantly with Wal*Mart before they closed the live fish dept.
I would constantly call the store, then the district manager in Nashville.
I called them to report the horrid conditions of all the fish. Seldom was
anything done and any changes were always temporary. In the one store I
can't recall every going there and not seeing fish covered with ich and dead
furry ones stuck to the filter intakes or rotting on the bottom. When they
closed that dept. I was thrilled out of my mind.
>You just have to let the right person know what's going on.
And then you have to keep checking back as they change employees constantly.

Yeah, I saw that on the Internet. For a breeder it pays to pay such prices
for an excellent specimen.

There was a PetLand that used to get the not so common fin variations
from a breeder, as well as what the wholesaler had.
This was a time yrs back when you *never* saw these fin types in
shops. You could only find the spindly, skinny, mass bred junk.
- - But there's always that "certain one" among the mass produced that
appeals. :-) They go right in my cart.
This particular PetLand had crowns that would knock your socks off, as
well as high quality Deltas.
They were also trying to get Halfmoons, but never did. The prices were
about the same as your 12.99 Delta.
Now a days you can sometimes find the nicer types tossed in a shipment
of regs at many stores.
I've seen a few nice Deltas in PetCo shipments, as well as being a not
so often seen color pattern, but only in the females. Never Delta
males.
- - You can buy both males and females here! Some of them were truly
beautiful nicely colored fish. If I were interested in breeding them I'd
find some nice fish to start with.
.......... That is of course if you haven't been
targeted by a certain Betta.....and he or she is coming home with you
no matter what you have to say about it.
Those types are called shady tricksters. You have to beware of them at
all times. You cannot deny them.
Resistance is futile.
- - Tell me about it! :-))
If you find that you have been the victim of one of these, may I
suggest frozen bloodworms to keep them happy at all times.
Freeze dried will not do at all, as they would take it as an insult to
them.
= )~
- - That reminds me, I've got to pick up frozen bloodworms next week when I
go back to Pet Supermarket for a replacement cory. Right now I have the
variety pack and that's real low also.

I was actually escorted off Wal MArt property in town, and told that
if I returned I wuol dbe arrested for tresspassing. Localcops
actuaslly came and read me the riiot act, manager filed a complaint on
me and I was told to vacate the premisis.all due to their inept fish
keeping ability. I really raised holy hell with them. I even took pics
(so I told them) and that really got them in an uproar. I sent info to
PETA and mailed Wally World almost daily. I used to send my wife or
youngin inside to get more needed evidence............and from time to
time I would make a quick run through myself ;p) That store and one
more here no longer sells fish of any kind. I even turned them in for
the live lobsters conditions............They soon quit handling live
lobsters. I made out ok though as I eventually obtained the entire
tank setup that was in the one store, when by default the person that
originally happend to get it fell down and could not pick it up, I
managed to acquire it, as well as a temp[erature controlled live
lobster tank.all free for the picking up and hauling away. That is the
2nd set of tanks I have aquired, as I got an entire setup from a Petco
previously...........I have since sold the petco setup but still have
the Wal mart setup going strong. I use them for over winter housing of
my tropicals once I take em out of the preforms outside.

- - I always spoke nicely to the manages but any changes were always
temporary. More than one manager told me their biggest problem is employees
lack of interest and knowledge of the fish they are assigned to care for.
They don't have knowledgeable people applying for the job. I suggest the
store pay a living wage and give people health benefits and perhaps they'd
find knowledgeable people and be able to keep them.

This was the situation at 3 local Walmart stores in the surrounding
towns.
They were disgusting, all of them. No one knew anything about fish,
and before 1 of the stores became fish only, they did horrid things to
the Hamsters. That same store also did things like put an entire
shipment of male Bettas into one tank because...and I quote the pet
dept. manager whom I was complaining to......"If you put a bunch of
them into the same tank, they don't fight."
He said this as several males were ripping each other's fins apart. I
pointed to chaos and said "Like that, right?"
I called for the store manager, and explained what this idiot is doing
with the male Bettas (weekly!), and that he even started to yell at me
when I insisted that they be put into separate tanks, etc etc...the
store manager turns to the pet dept. manager who is all steamed up at
me, gets told off good by the head manager because he knew that you
don't ever put male Bettas together and why and on and on (It was
great to witness that after a couple weeks of this guy doing it), and
how they needed to be put into separate tanks right away....the next
week all the males were in different tanks, none with Goldfish, and
the idiot king was no longer the pet dept. manager. He was moved to a
different part of the store.
The store manager must have looked into this guy's background in the
department a little closer. A while before this was happening with the
bettas, they were with holding food and water from all the hamsters
and piggies. The reason I was told by employees was that they don't
mess the cages up so much (pee and poo). They also kept the males and
female mixed in together, as well as way too many per cage. The
conditions were cruel.
The store manager wasn't there, niether was the department manager,
and since no body in authority was available to speak to, I had to
call the 800# and explain this to customer service.
I went there later the next evening and they were all gone.
All the birds, all the hammies, and piggies too.
Just fish now.
They have no business dealing with pets anyway, just supplies.
The other Walmart, which was a fish only store from the time they
opened a couple yrs ago, never figured out how to take any sort of
care of fish, or the filtration system, how to *not* gobs of food per
tank, why not to turn off the filters, why you should remove the dead,
and how to clean those cups the male Bettas are in. An inch of brown
water is never a good thing.
A few weeks ago they took down their fish tanks. YEA!!!
No fish at all, not even Bettas in little cups anymore.
I have had (usually no luck when dealing with Walmart's customer
service, except that one terrible store's head manager.
If that particular guy was on duty or got the message about the
situation, it was handled right away.
Any other human in charge in that same store never did anything.
PetCo online complaints seem to get taken seriously when you give them
contact infoformation.
The times when I left my info, it got handled. I could opt for a call
back or not. Sometimes I did, but mostly not.
Being that I'm able to check the local stores weekly for their stock,
I see changes right away.
The last time I was in one of the local PetCo's I tried to alert the
clerk that they had a double rayed crown tail female in a male's
container...and were charging a male's CT's prive (much higher).
The females are all the same cost, no matter the fin type, but male
CT's are more than the veils.
The lady took it to the back room and came back and said,
"Nope....it's a male."
I explained to her that I was a long time breeder, and I'm 100%
positive that that fish is a female , double rayed - crown tail. It's
also has an obvious egg tube showing"...as I point to the egg tube....
She then goes on with her chin up (for real, like snobby) and said
"Well my fish expert says it's a male."
I chuckled and told her "Tell your fish "expert" that male Bettas
don't have obvious egg tubes." = )~
I just hope she did tell her "expert" what I said, because maybe then
they would look and see that yes....there is something there and
learn.
========================
I remember when they sold hamsters and birds. The birds would be dead on
the bottom with no water or filthy water, no food or the wrong food. Others
would be puffed up and even a blind person could see they were sick.
Hamsters and white mice crammed together like sardines. Sometimes walking
over the dead ones.... no one cared. It's not really fair of WW to hire
people with no interest in pets or fish and expect them to care for them
humanely and properly. It's just not going to happen. I'm really thrilled
that they stopped selling live things. I hope they did this Nationwide.
As for trying to educate anyone in these stores..... don't waste your time.
The clerk there today will be gone tomorrow and couldn't care less if they
tried.

She / he / it knows deep down she is nothing but a two bit "ho" from
the git go and can not stand for anyone to know more than her. She can
not refuse to reply to any post made, as she enoys the attention she
gleems form it. TYNK is a ****tard, nothing more. I own "it" plain and
simple and its driving her nuts. She is obsessed with replying to
defend her so called "honor" duh, and duh again

No, but it sounds like you found some nice ones. I bet you're going to
breed them. How can you not? ;-)))
I was very dissapointed today at PetsMart. They hadn't gotten anything new
in (in over 2 weeks) and I saw a lot of those "fuzzy" fish. You know the
ones, they like to stick to the intake pipe and give off strange aromas.
And their prices are .50 to a dollar higher, per fish, than PetSupermarket.
The usual employees were gone. It was a whole new crew.
The bettas were the dregs of whatever they got in several weeks ago. I
should have picked up one or two then. Nothing I would want to bring home
was there today. All I left there with was a nice clump of water-wisteria.
I'm waiting to find 2 or three nice clown loaches but Ich is such a problem
with them. What do you find safe to use on CLs if they turn up with Ich?

Have you ever tried Quick Cure or Aqurasol on them? I always have these on
hand but was told QC is a harsh cure and Aqurasol not very effective. Any
opinions on these two for loaches? I ask because I want to have the cure on
hand before I buy them and bring them home.

Where I live it's a given that CLs will come down with Ich as soon as you
put them in your tank. I'm hoping they get some nice clowns in next week.
I'll start with 2, then maybe add 2 more now that the reg' pleco is gone.

Tynks a dumbass, it takes more than 7 days to kill off all stages of
ICH.thats why most of the ich products have regimines for up to 2 or 3
weeks or more.

They're going into a quarantine tank at 82F for 21 days so I can watch them
closely. Treatment would continue until they're Ich free for at least a
week. I'm projecting as they may not be infested. The shops here are very
good about selling Ich free fish. Only one mom & pop shop are well known
for their Ichy fish and I seldom go there. When I do it's just to look, not
to buy.

I have one of those aquarium barrels the last trio loved. I'm also going to
pick up a few bits of PVC they can feel secure in.

The last ones I had thrived. And yep, I usually have bloodworms on hand and
other frozen goodies for the fish. :-)

They're going to love the sunroom. It's the least used room in the house.
It's just for my plants and fish. No noise and little traffic - I'm the
traffic! To them: Me = FOOD! :-D

==============================
Right now there's the 5g with my male blue betta. There's the 55g of mixed
tropicals. There's the second 55g which is now empty, right next to it. I'm
not sure what I'm going to put in it - if anything. Then in the dining-room
I have the 10g with the celestial GF and 2 ottos. This also serves as a
hospital tank and quarantine tank.
The outside fish take a lot of my time and energy. I still have about 200
koi fry I was unable to sell this summer. My area is becoming saturated with
koi.
