View Full Version : Getting Bombarded by 100's of spam/virus emails!

The Madd Hatter

Is anyone else getting hammered by these virus emails that purport to be
from Microsoft? I'm drowning in them! Since last thursday I've deleted
approximately 2400-2600 of these from my email. They are all to the address
I use here, which I created for use in the NG's.

It is the Swen virus. This has also happened on the "HotWheels" board. Cary

It's happened here, on alt.games.half-life ,
alt.games.half-life.counterstrike , and many others. I have also received
over 1,000 virus emails in the last 3 days.
At the least, he should get 20-30 years of algae scraping as punishment.

if you spam out your address here, they have a subroutine that will strip
out, SPAM, NO, DOT, NOT, etc and replace them with likely letters to
complete a real address...

they have bots that download every message on a newsgroup and strip the
headers, put addresses together and return them to the user...

in some groups they've even resorted to putting addresses in backwards....

yes, and I kept getting returned mail which I had not sent out in the first
place alternating in with these messages. I believe it called a swen worm
and it ceased when I did the worm correction download and the latest
security update off of the microsoft. site- don't download anything off the
attachments on the stuff you are getting, go to the microsoft website

you may not have that problem, it's a trick of sorts.... you MAY have d'l'ed
it as a patch, but if you've went to the MS site, you'll probably be ok...

I don't know if it is a coincidence that my worm emails stopped after I did
the downloads or not but I went to microsoft.com/downloads/search and
downloaded the blaster worm update and the security update for my version of
windows, even though the site told me I was up to date on my updates. (lots
of updates there!) They quit coming in after that

I got the same problem. I use this U2email account strictly for Usenet. But
I'm about to switch to abuse@localhost and spell out my email in the body of
the message. It's getting ridiculous.

Thanx for the replies guys... It looks like its more of a nuisance then a
danger, as long as NAV and Windows are updated and email scanningis on.. I
don't have any infections, just 1000's of these emails hitting me
constantly. For now I've just setup message rules that send all emails not
addressed specifically to me, straight to the delete folder. I've read
rumors that the virus may be able to go on usenet and refresh its list of
email addresses by scanning recent posts. I think I'll mask my email addy
here so it doesn't get harvested again....

There seems to be a guy over in the reef group that is harvesting all the
aquaria news groups e-mails and having a spam day with them. Don't leave
your real addy anywhere for the next few weeks or until this mullet decides
to go elsewhere. NB, Do not feed the trolls. Ignore them and they'll go
away. Ignorance is bliss :)

Yes, I'm getting hit too . Spamcop isin't doing much about it. They are
calling them "bounces" and it's supposingly hard to find the source.
This Micro soft spam thing may just have to run it's course, before we
can do any thing about it.

My wife is getting 100's of those and I am not getting any. We share a
cable modem through a router. Strange..

Went to Symantec - tried the removal tool... found nothing - still getting
them. Annoying....

I have been lucky because I never post from my pc but use my webtv
instead. With my limited space any large e-mail with attachments gets
bumped back at who ever sends it. But then again I never open anything
if I don't know who I got it from.

Vicki

One other thing with a webtv set up is the ability to turn off e-mail so
no spam gets through.

One of the reasons it is taking so long to run its course is because people
are opening and running the attachments which causes a new wave of infected
spam mails to go out.
