Please suggest a good heater brand. I've been through 3 brands of 100 watt
heaters, all of which seem to lose the ability to keep my 20 gallon long at
78 degrees F after a few days. I am using a full hood, before anyone asks,
and room temp stays no lower than 68 degrees F.

I would cast my suspicions at the thermometer in this case. Unless you're
talking abut 3 old heaters? Check w/ another thermometer. I almost cooked my
fish once while the thermometer steadfastly assured me that the temp in my
tank was 81 degrees.

This heater sounds a bit small to me. Why not spend the extra money and buy
a 200 or 300 watt heater. It will cost more but when u add up the cost of
3x100 watt heaters its quite cheap

I think heater placement can determine how lucky you are with your
heater.... I place mine near the intake of the filter, or near some
powerheads....

Ebo-Jager.

I place my heaters either in my sump, or horizontal, near the bottom
of the tank. Convection from the heater goes up and gives good
distribution of the heat.

a 300 watt heater for a 20 g tank, that is way to much heater IMHO. Max I
would think is 5 watts per gallon in say a basement type setting. In the
posters case with his room temp at 68 his 100 watt heater should be more
than adequate. I have switched to Ebo Jager for all my heaters . Fully
submersible, adjustable in one degree increments and thicker glass.
