View Full Version : Cloudy water

I have a 30 gal. with 6 cichlids and my water stays very cloudy and orange
in color. I have tried algae shock tablets and those work for 5-8 days then
the water is back cloudy. The tank has only been set up for about 2 months
now. I am using a powerhead filter which I have cleaned recently. Any
suggestions what might help clear this up?

if that's ALL the filtering going on, you're probably overloading the
bio-capacity of the filter... Add a second, or a more capable filter and I'd
bet you'll have better luck....
also, it may not be algae that's in bloom... may be a bacteria bloom if it's
a new tank....

what are the cichlids and how big are they? Regardless, a powerhead filter
on a 30 gallon is not sufficient.

What do you think about a Fluval 404 on a 75gal with about 30 juvenile
cichlids. I'm considering an additional filter but have not made up my mind
as to what type. Suggestions?

How about that Fluval with an additional filter aswell...thats an awful lot
of Fish you have there, they may be juveniles now but will be bigger in less
time than you can say "hell, I should have bought that 2nd filter :)"

I'm not a fan of fluvals, but thats neither here nor there. I have a 77
gallon w/ approx. 30 or so cichlids (ranging in size from 2.5" to almost
4"... I run 2 aquaclear 300's. Both have the AC foam sponge on the bottom,
while one is filled the rest ofthe way w/ carbon, and the other is filled w/
filter floss. Clarity is awesome, and they give really good surface
movement. Easier to clean and service too.

Hi Cam,
The pond worked out better then I though, but not as great as I'd hoped. I
ended up w/ approx. 750 to 800 US gallons of water. I initiaaly had 15 or so
large mbuna in there w/ 20 3" feeder goldfish. Filtration was a problem
because i used a 5 gallon rubbermaid tub submerged in the pond w/ bioballs
and filter floss, connected to a pump w/ fountain head. I think the gold
fish were too much for the filter. water turned green and cloudy w/ lots of
algae. I then drained it and removed the fish and refilled. I now added
about 300 fry ranging from 1/2" to 2" of various cichlids. This worked much
better since I got great growth rates, excellent color and no clouding.
Unfortunately i was only able to leave them in for about 4 weeks since the
temperature started to drop. I'll post some pics in a few days for you to
see. Its now dormant w/ just the goldfish in for the winter. Planning to
start it up again next july w/ fry to see how well it does in a while
season.
Cheers mate!

Cool beans
If you see one of my posts reply and let me know when you have the pics.
You'll have to mail me direct or upload them somewhere as I do not have
access to the binaries group :(
Thanks a stack d00d :)
