Texas cichlids ( Herichthys carpinte ) are highly agressive , true . But if
you have a large enough tank and know how to manage their aggression they
are beautiful, intelligent, "pet-like" fish.

I've kept them in the past. Two of them were deserving of their bad
reputation, but the other pair I had were wonderful. Great coloration,
intresting behavior, and intelligent enough to tell humans apart. They would
swim to the surface and wait for food when I would go near the tank, but
they would splash water at anyone else. I rate them as difficult, but worth
it if you have the space and enough information on them. They are also some
of the best parents I've seen.

lol this is the FIRST fish I ever had.

LFS sold him to me as a 1.5 inch fish. I put him and another texas with 3
firemouths in the huge new 20 gallon I got for christmas... this did not
last long when I found out how aggressive and large all of those were going
to get.

He killed everything.
He eventually got so big I found a 90 gallon with full oak canopy and stand
for $200
He killed everything I tried keeping with him in there. A lobster, and my
foot long pleco to name the 2 most surprising ones. The only things to ever
live for any length of time was a rhamdilochromis macrothalmus (spelling may
be off but common name is orange sided pike) and a lace syndontis cat fish
(who is still alove today)

That texas cichlid (Slick was his name) knew me when I entered to room and
could tell where I was from 10-15 feet away. He was huge and I kept him for
5 years. He made me need to learn more about fish to keep him and that is
why I am the fishphile I am today. I still miss him sometimes and there is a
big part of my interaction with him that I do not get out of my current
setup in that tank with all africans. Africans are incredible looking but I
just got a better sense of inteligence out of my texas...

It also helped he was huge so everyone who saw him immediately started
asking questions. I know for a fact after 3 different peopel saw him and my
tank and talked with me they went out and got their own tanks.
