View Full Version : Discus Tank with Fine Sand as Substrate?

I saw some Discus setup uses fine white sand as
substrate base

I was wondering if this is Ok :
1) Discus likes to graze substrate for food bits,
so will the fine sand irritates its gills?
2) Will the sand alters the water condition of
the tank? We all know Discus likes it soft

I've kept my Discus in a tank with silica sand substrate for over 2
years and they're fine.

I have discus and I need to frequently vacuum the substrate to remove
uneaten food. Sand is so fine it will be picked up in the process, also
drawn into power filters and other assorted intakes if they are placed to
close to the bottom of the tank. I chose the finest gravel I could find, a
little more coarse than sand, just enough to keep it on the bottom where it
belongs!
