Penn-Plax

What can anyone tell me about this brand of cannister filter? I'm
considering a Penn Plax 700 as a secondary filter for my 55g and I
have to admit that I'm not too familiar with the brand.

Buy an Aquaclear 300.. I realize Penn Plax is a slightly cheaper company
and I have used some of thier stuff, but in MHO, I like using the AC's for
thier realiability, ease of cleaning, and the ability to create your own
media filter bags for very cheap... I am currently running 2 AC 300's and a
402 PH on my over stocked Koi, GF and Oscar combined tank.. I have around 80
inches of fish in this 55 US G tank. I beleive in going over kill on my
filtration... I believe I have enough filtration for just over 200US G's on
this tank. Water is crystal clear and ammonia and nitrite levels are
zeroed...

After trying many different filters over my 10 year experience with the
hobby, I would never go back to anything besides an Eheim. Their
manufacture is superior, and their ease of use and reliability is legendary.
In MHO, any other canister filter is a cheap knockoff of the Eheims.

This being said, I would add a word of caution about the new 'cheap' line
that Eheim recently introduced. They go by the model name of 'Ecco', and
don't seem to follow the reliability record of the rest of the Eheim
products. I've never owned one, but a friend who tried one was sorely
disappointed in them.

It sure seems the Ehiem is the way to go, seems like a lot of people have
been raving about them.. I have not seem these product in any of the local
LFS around here.. Mind you I have not been looking very hard lately
eithier.. I know the AC can b had on E bay fairly cheap.. I got three of the
AC's for about half the price they sell for in stores (thats including the
shipping cost).

Koi Goldfish AND Oscars?????? WyAkak, do whatever this guy says!!! If there
was ever an ultimate test for a filtration system, I'd toss those three
species in abundance into a tank to see what holds up!

I love AC's, as long as you go w/ the 300 or 500. I feel my 150's intake is
too skinny to do a good job. I do have a 77 Gallon tank, over stocked w/
african cichlids, primarily mbuna, ranging in size from 3" to 5". There are
close to 40 fish in there, so it is majorly overstocked, but I've got 2 AC
300's running in there, w/ a tonne of carbon and a quilt batting in each. I
do bi-weekly water changes of 33%, and every week I replace the filter floss
from one of the filters. Those AC 300's grab everything that makes it into
the water column! To alleviate any issues w/ nitrates, I have several stalks
of bamboo growing in the back. Gives the tank a unique look and they are
very active in filtering the nitrates.

Did I mention I do 20% water changes every couple of weeks or so. I
definantly load my system to the max.. Waters crystal clear and Ammonia and
Nitrates are non existant or very minimum... I think I also failed to
mention the 6 inch pl*co in there as well...

Talk about a challenge huh.. All is doing well... 5 or 6 GF, 5 Koi, 3 Oscars
and 1 6inch Pl*co... This is why I can say I am happy with my AC 300's and
the lone AC 402 power head...
