View Full Version : help needed to identify cichlid

I've just started up a cichlid tank and picked up from my LFSa couple
of chiclids they had trouble identifying.

There are like yellow labs, but the colur is a very pale cream (almost
the same as the coral sand) , the shop thought they were young lallow
labs but both are a reasonable size, and the contrast with the much
smaller normal yellow labs in the tank was marked

I have to say I love the colour and am tempted to go back and get two
more to try and establsih a breeding group of four, but I thought I
had better work out exactly what I am getting first

Any ideas?

Normally, I read up on the fish and then buy 'em - but hey, what do I know!
I'm Danish!

Try doing that where I live (Bristol) and you will end up with an
empty tank

I did my research, got together my list of ideal fishes and have spent
a fruitless month trying to find even one of them, so far I've been to
six different shops and even tried to find a private breeder without
success

I'm assuming that the fish above is a colour variation of a fish that
was on my "long list"

Would they be "Lemon" cichlids?? I am not certain of the terminology for
Labs.. I am assuming Electric Yellows...I have a group of 6 EL's.. four are
dark yellow, and two are much lighter, although they do show the verticle
strips and faint black markings on thier dorsal fins...

For ten years or so, I had golden severums that match that description.
They were beautiful fish, but large, at 8" or so once fully grown. Perhaps
that's what you have.

Have checked lemon cichlid and golden severums but don't resemble
either, if it wasn't for the colour being so pale and creamy, I would
just say they were a slightly bleached out yellow lab, since the
markings are very similar, but at present there isn't even a trace of
yellow,

Labidochromis sp. "Perlmutt" maybe? There are several species/varieties of
Labidochromis with similar shape to the electric yellows.

This is what I was thinking of as well. Labidochromis Perlmutts. Do some of
them occassionally show vert. stripes?
