View Full Version : struggling with correct identification of rift cichlid

I bought a pair of Labeotropheus trewavasae, the weekend before last
from what is normally a good shop, however, I am increasingly coming
to the opinion that they have mis-identified the fish, since the shape
of the mouth is wrong.
Has anyone come across a cichlid with a distinctive yellow mouth, with
a pale purple head and patchy body. The shape is more squat that
streamlined. Size at present is about 5cm.
I'm pretty sure it's not a Labeotropheus fuelleborni either

maybe a Labeotropheus Trevasse? not sure of the spelling, but its closely
related to the fulleborni, w/ the same sort of mouth for algae grazing.

Thanks - but that's the problem, it's neither - totally wrong shape of
mouth

There are quite a few color morphs/locations of Labeotropheus species in the
hobby now.
Their mouths are pretty distinctive though. Could it be an Eretmodus,
Tanganyika goby cichlid?
Color of goby cichlid is not as you describe though. Please post when you
ID it!

I think my original post is causing confusion - the mouth shape is
normal not with the overlip, which is why I don't think it is either a
fuelleborni or trewavasae, I think the only solution will be to try
and take a photo and post that on the web.

I remember having some fish that fit your description years ago but I
can't remember the name. They where almost certainly assigned to the
Pseudotropheus genus in those days. You should be able to find them on
Mike Olivers web site http://malawicichlids.com

If you don't have any luck finding the pics on the site Steve recommended,
you can also browse through the photos at www.cichlidpress.com in the photos
section. Ad hasn't finished loading in all the photos and making them available,
but he's done a lot of the Malawi pics and has quite a few Labeotropheus in
there.
You may also want to check out the Metriaclima section. I'd recommend the
Mylochromis and Pseudotropheus section, but they're not complete yet. ;-)
