The best thing to keep the bottom of the tank clean is the person
that feeds the fish! Bottom cleaners may do a half decent affair but
its too much to be expected for fish to keep the bottom clean and
human intervention is stillgoing to be required.
Most any of the catfish in the coryadorus family do a fair job, as do
weather (DOJO) loaches. If your getting an accumulation of foods yuor
feeding too much...........The bottom may require a vacuuming on
occassion but it should not really become that dirty or full of
detrius etc that it is so noticeable. Usually there is an accumulation
of detrius that does build up over time that gets down betweenthe
gravel or substrate that needs vaccuuming out.......Use what is called
a Phython or gravel cleaner to clean substrate.........

Albino cory cats do pretty well, and they're fun to watch.

You'll get various answers to that. If you feed twice a day as most do,
put a little food in - if it's gone in less than a minute you haven't
given them enough. If there's still some left after two minutes, you're
feeding too much.
For the cories, at most a half a bottom feeder tablet per fish once a day
should be more than enough. Don't feed them at all one or two days a week
and they'll do a better job of cleanup. But if you get the food amount
right for the other fish the cories will need fed at least 6 days a week.

No real need to make supplemental independant feedings for most bottom
feeders like Corys. There is usually always going to be sufficient
foods that get by most fish to enable a cory to find food, or at most
all I ever put in with a cory is 2 shrimp pellets per
cory............so between uneated foods that get my other fish and a
shrimp pellet they have always done fine and bred to...so evidently
its more than adequate.

I have 2 corys in each 55g tank. All are looking fat and sassy so they're
getting enough. :-) I drop a shrimp pellet in every other day or so because
the clowns love them too! The platys in the live-bearer tank also love to
nibble on them.

Shrimp pellets are a good all around food / treat that pretty well
most all fish will eat or pick at. I do find the ones made by Wardley
to have a much higher "strange" smell to them as compared to Tetra
brand or Top Fin (Petsmart house brand) as well as others like Hikari
etc......

I like to stay away from store brand generics (Top Fin, etc.) and the
low end brands Hartz..Wardley, etc.
These lower quality pellets tend to make such a mess, one of the
bigger down falls with shrimp pellets.
Tetra makes some good foods, but I recommend Hikari products.
==========================================
Most of what I see locally made by Hikari is goldfish food. I did see and
buy some Tropical Flakes I saw. My fish also like HBI foods, especially the
soft moist type.

Hey RM.If you sever see Hikari Micro Wafers, give them a try. I have
yet to find a fish that would not eat them. What you need to do is
send Hikari an email and tell them their food is high dollar, and yuor
income is low dollar, and yu need to be very selective on what foods
your fish will actualy consume and benefit from, and you will not
spend $X.XX on food only to have the fish turn their noses up at it.
Tell them you know drug companies, and dog food companies all send out
free samples and was wondering if they also did. I was told to do
this and I did and I received a email asking for my residence so they
could mail a package of samples to me. They sent me a heap of packets
of all kinds of foods ...............which fed my fish for quite some
time. Also look in the various petstores like Deathco and Petsmart
etc, as often times the distributor puts a box of sample packets of
foods there for customers to take and try.........Thats how I found
out about the MIcro Wafers.............almost resembles coarse ground
blackpepper, and the fish love it..........it is my main food anymore,
along with Shrimp pellets and bulk feeds I buy. My tanks are no more
messy feeding the bulk feeds nor do the fish look bad nor do they east
more or less............but it costs me much less in pocket money to
feed my fish......Feeding cheap foods and making a mess is an old
wives bull**** tale.just like Wardly and Hartz .........Give em a
variety and they all work just great.........

I'm waiting for the brand new ultra modern PetsMart to open in my nearest
town. I bet they'll have a large selection of feeds and carry Hikari
products. The smaller mom and pop store called "Extreme Pets" that just
opened has a very small selection of fish foods - and fish. I can't see how
they'll compete with the two large chains.

Based on what Gill Passman and Tynk aka Kelly posts you have to always
feed the highest priced most expensive foods, buy the most expensive
setups, and have the biggesta dbn best of anything so it does the job
correctly and is fit to own. Thats Kelly's (aka Tynk"s) way of doing
things, Do not worry about the small aspects just buy the best and it
should be ok.......................if it does not work just throw more
money at it..................uh huh! TYNK + GILL = 2 DUMBASSES

I'll second the approval of Hikari foods. The micro wafers are great and
they also have micro pellets for smaller fish or fish with small mouths.

After reading this thread, I was in Walmart here last night and looked
to see what they had as far as wafers. They had Wardley brand and Hikari
brand algea wafers. Doesn't mean they carry them in TN stores but they
typically carry the same things nation wide.
It was the only Hikari product I saw though.

Try shopping for fish food in a "real" store and not in Wally World
where the majority of "rednecks" and illegals shop for cut rate crap!
If a store (other than Wally World) carries Hikari products then they
can get in mirco wafers or pellets simply by ordering from
vendor.................Besides online is just too cheap to not use
decent foods like Hikari and even with shipping it may come out as
cheap as or cheaper than buying cheap foods locally....................

I've always liked Hikari brand and would buy it when I saw it somewhere in
my travels. Another I like is the HBH soft pellets. The fish love them but I
can't find the real small size suitable for my bettas and smaller tetras.
All I found was a size suitable for small goldfish or cichlids. I'm eager to
see what this new store has and it's only 15 minutes from my house.

I've yet to see Hikari in Wal*Mart but I'll check next week when I'm food
shopping there. I buy the Shrimp pellets and Tubifex worms there since they
have the lowest prices - that's about it.

The only reason I paid attention to it is because of this thread. I went
to the pet section just to see if I could find Hikari products. I have a
bag of the Hikari Algae Wafers but it is because someone gave them to me
when I took her plecostamus off her hands. As for eating it, I don't see
a lot of difference in the way my algae eaters eat the Hikari's versus
the Wardley's brand.

so......and she knows everything.
If you have a "very" knowledgeable LFS that your in tight with, you
might be able to get them to order yu the large "Store" package that
is not marketed for retail trade. Its a large container with a shaker
spout which makes feeding an act like shaking out some salt or pepper
on food...............and its pretty hard to shake too much out with
the container.................plus it costs a great deal less to buy
than the retail containers. So if you drop a lot of $$$$$ at the LFS
see if they will cut you some slack on that item and order it for you.

I think the most important thing is variety. If they're fed a variety and
not underfed, they'll thrive. I must have 10 different types of flakes and
pellets I feed them. I also buy the frozen foods. They go wild over that
but it sure is expensive.

Frozen is closer to what they would normally eat in the wilds. I play
with a lot of sal****er fish and if it was not for my making my own
food for them I would probabnly have a heap less fish and tanks to
deal with, but fortunately making sal****er fish food is pretty darn
cheap, andm uch easier to do than making FW fish food......
For example I use fresh shrimp, fresh fish (cheapest I can find
mackeral, sea bass, porgies, etc etc) clams, scallops, mussles, squid,
rotifiers and a pack or two of NORI sheet algae, a bit of garlic
extract or even fresh ground up garlic, and Selcon......run it all
through a blender/ food processer, and then spoon it out into 6 x 6
plastic baggies and place on cookie tray and freeze into packets.
Pull a baggie of it out and break off pieces to swish around inside
the tank and as it melts particles of it float free inthe
water.....Easy to make.however the Freshwater deal is much harder, to
acquire the needed ingredieints, that are beneficial...........
Try attaching a piece of NORI (sheet Algae) to a piece of rock or
water logged drift wood for the algae eating fish to eaty in a FW
setup............mine all love Nori Sheet algae and its much cheaper
to buy than the wafers.......

I still haven't seen these sheets in any of our local stores. We don't have
stores that cater to Asians. Have you seen this algae anywhere else?
I hope the prices are a little lower in the new PetsMart that's about to
open soon.

It is also available in a lot of health food stores. They sell it in
World Imports Store also...and IIRC I have seen it in Wally World in
the section that has asian foods etc noodles, sauces and such......
(just a small area but I distinctly seen it was listed as Asian foods
section)........The same exact algae sheets will set you back $9 or 10
bucks for a package of lesser quantity in the big box pet stores.

Do you have a Japanese resaurant near you? Anyplace with a sushi bar is
bound to have nori by the ream... Have a meal, tell them about your
dilemma. Most are happy to sell you some.
Or, you can order online (I don't think your live plant experience will
carry over to a dried good like nori)

None near us. We have a large Mexican population and I can get anything
that community would buy.... but we have almost no Asian people here.

I heard of a restaurant supply house that supplies Chinese and Asian
eateries in Nashville I want to check out first. I was given the location
but they didn't know the name of the place. It's about 20 miles from
here........ They may even have something I'm interested in for myself.
