View Full Version : Fish stocking is now complete

Hey all,
Believe my tank is now fully stocked...tell me what you think of this
list, and this is in a 72 gallon bow.
Hippo tang (juvenile)
Foxface (juvenile)
Ocellaris clown (I htink I spelled that right)
golden headed sleeper goby
PJ Cardinal
3 green chromis
Inverts:
scarlet shrimp
cleaner shrimp
coral banded shrimp
about 22 turbo snails and a half dozen hermits
I anticipate still bulking up with some more inverts at some point, but
I think that's pretty much it for the fish stock...think it sounds like
an appropriate amount of stuff? Its with about 100 or 110 lbs of live
rock, and just starting to really get some stuff in there besides: some
zoanthids, and a couple of mushroom types are it for now, until I get
the calcium level up (its still sitting at 360...probably gonna be going
the turbocal route this week since I have a TON of coralline algae in
there).

Just remember the Hippo and Fox face are grazing fish, they love the
seaweed. Good luck with your tank

Thanks for the response. I know they're grazers, hence why I toss in
that nori periodically...i more wanted to check in to make sure tha tI
wasn't overstocked - I know that th fox and hippo are both going to be
getting a good deal larger than they are currently...

I'd add 2 fighting conchs and 25 cerith snails to keep the sand bed
healthy.
I'm still working up to shrimp. I didn't know you could mix that many
in an aquarium.
Enjoy the tank. Put up a pic if you get a chance.

In my 58 gallons tank I have two scarlet and two fire shrimps
doing great (Lysmata amboinensis and Lysmata debelius)
I can imagine many more shrimps in his much bigger 72g. tank.

Lie, you have no where near a ton of coraline algae, so why lie about
it? YOur lucky it weights 6 ounces tops....

Kurt,
I'll have to look into the conchs, but to be honest the golden headed
goby keeps my subtrate pretty well mashed around...if you've never seen
one, they fill their mouth with substrate and then sift it through their
gills, looking for little critters to eat...he keeps things stirred up
well enough that I have to go in every few days to re-level the sand bed
a bit (otherwise I get a tremendous mound in the middle, and am
practically bare on the sides).
As for the shrimp, I added my cleaner shrimp WAY early on because my
clown fish was in need of him (he had that odd cottony growth). He's
done well, molted several times etc. The scarlet still seems quite
antisocial, preferring to hang out in the back where no one can see him,
but I spent about 20 minutes watchin the coral banded pick throug my
live rock and feeding himself...it was actually fascinating.

Funny. It sounds somewhere between a nuisance and entertaining.
What do you feed him?

Well, I've been adding copepods on a monthly basis to the refug, but for
the most part he eats the same as all the rest of the fish...flake,
brine...about the only offering he has shown no interest in is the nori.
It is something of a nuisance, but also fascinating to watch.

Some times the coral banded shrimp like to have the
other shrimp over for dinner.

I guess you have not read books about Deep Sand Bed setups...
This fish is actually work against you eating animals (sand dwellers)
you want to have in the sand. On opposite, snails he is recomending to
you are herbivourus so they are not danger to sand dwelling animals.

I have read in many places about this shrimp being
quite aggressive but mostly for the other shrimps of
its own kind...
When I mix shrimps in my tank I stick to Lysmata shrimps.

I've not seen any indication of aggression between the species...and at
the LFS they were all together in a large tank as well.
As for the goby working against me, I enjoy the goby :p

If you ever expect to add a Mandarin, skip the shrimp (especially cleaners).
They compete for food, and the Mandarin usually won't eat anything but copepods.

I have a fat and happy mandarin, so I guess that nixes the shrimp. I
also have a pseudochromis that hunts for copepods. I could easily live
without him, but I suspect that he'll be the last fish standing.

It's easier to keep them together in a big tank than
it is in a smaller tank.
The fact that they already knew each other in the
big tank, and both went into the smaller tank at the
same time is to your advantage.

Pseudochromis like to kill shrimp as well. If the
shrimp is in the tank first, it usually works out,
but if the pseudochromis is in first, then poor shrimp.

Good to know. I almost bought a pair of coral banded shrimp recently.
That would have been an expensive lesson.
People that see my tank like the pseudochromis, but I just see him as a
pest. I'd love to get a mate for the mandarin, but I think the
pseudochromis would have to go. (Any excuse will work these days).
