View Full Version : PetSmart and Oscars

As many of you know, I love bashing chain operations like PetSmart
here in the groups, especially when they do things like claiming the
maximum size of the Red Bellied Pacu is 11 inches -- But, I had a
refreshing experience there yesterday. I went in to look at their
Oscars and decided to get a couple for a new 55 -- and the sales
person actually questioned me about the size of my tank and whether I
had ever kept Oscars before! She said she was on a campaign to keep
large tropicals like Oscars out of cruel ten-gallon fishtanks. I
thanked her for asking and complimented her. I certainly hope that
it's part of PetSmart's employee training these days. Tropical fish
are live animals deserving of our respect.

I have applied for a job with PS.. Hopefully I will get the job.. My
intention is to inform people about the needs of fish ( as well as earning a
living ). A lot of people do not realize how big certain fish get... Pacus
and Tinfoils Often get very large and obviously need a larger tank than
most.. Most people don't realize the literal tank busting size of these
fish. A local privite LFS has an enormous Pacu ( aprox 18 to 20 inches ) ,
he mentioned they were given the fish as the owner didn't have any more room
left in his 100g tank for him.. I have seen tf barbs over 12 inches in
length stuck in a 30g tank.. Esssh.. I have seen 10 inch piranah in a 20g
tank.. Oh boy, some people don't know what they are getting til it is to
late, so to speak. Needless to say sometimes the employees have never had
the expieriance of seeing these fish in adult form.. You could probably get
away with 2 or 3 Oscars in a 55, but I wouldn't push it.. Never mind an
Arrowana ( I have seen 2ft specemins in 40g tanks,,,essh).. Hopefully things
will work out and I land the job.. Wish me luck, as I would want to let
people know what they are getting into with certain species..

Well the poor Cow was only asking, HaHa.
That's what happens when you leave your halo off, and wear your Dumb look
So did she let you buy, your little Oscar, ?????????????? Did she sell you
a small packet of fish flakes as well.
