ExPat

Petco
Petsmart
Pets +
Petland
Wetpets and Pups
Petsville

and now there is yet two more new stores being added that will
dealwith fish only.....

Aquarium Design
The Reef

All this in such a small area of the one outside type mall here. Maybe
it will lead to price wars among themall and prices will drop but odds
are all it will lead to is more dead critters and more idiots buying
critters they really have no business buying or having.

Holy Moley! You're floating in pet stores down there. Sounds like a fish
lovers dream. :-) Our new PetsMart opened a few weeks ago and I love it!
The fish section is larger than the older store in a nearby city and all the
fish look great. So now I have PetsMart and PetSupermarket here and a short
distance away Petco which I don't like. Only their bettas are nice and look
healthy. Their fish section is very small.

Yep were drowning in petshops if thats what you want to call
them...........I personally hate Deathco (petco) even though one of my
best friends is store manager of the local "Deathco" here. I can get
some super discount buys through her and I still do not partronize the
place......The Petland is scheduled to open this Saturday.and guess
what...........pretty well their entire stock of fish
died..........seems somethng happened (so I am told and heard) to
their filtration / aeration setup and since stock tanks are pretty
darn heavily stocked for sales anyhow, they (future Petland
employees) came in to find most of the fish belly up...There is just
way too many petshops, and now I hear another is underway.....about
1/2 mile fromthese others......The Seahorses Pouch......yet another
fish and reptile store. You can go to Goodwill or any other Thrift
Store here and buy pretty well anything you need for fish at
drastically reduced rates and find virtually any size aquarium over
time.......Goodwill had not one, not two but three complete setups of
55 gal, and also a 90gal and 115 gal setup and no telling now many 10,
20 and 29 gal tanks they have stacked up along the wall......

Oh man, what a shame. :*( Maybe just too many fish too soon and someone
with a heavy hand with the food container. Oh, I forgot, the other new
store here is called Extreme Pets and he also sells reptiles and fish. The
store is small and the selection not large, naturally. I'm hoping he takes
some of my koi fry. I'm overrun with them and next month they'll be
breeding again.

I seldom see fishtanks in our two Goodwill stores but have made out like a
bandit on old fish bowls of 1g or more. The largest tanks I saw there were a
few 10g tanks complete with garish gravel and broken filters. I sure don't
need any more tanks.

I don't know if this applies where you live but the first Saturday of every
month here everything at Goodwill is 1/2 price and don't forget to ask for
your senior discount. ;-)

Well I for one sure do not need to buy any more fish since I already
shut down most of all our tanks since its going to be our son and
daughter-inlaw that is oging to be taking care of the ones we left up
and in tact. They both work, but enjoy fish as well but all we had
setup was just going to be too much for them, to take care of and work
and stil maintain this place as well as the two grand kids and other
livestock.

Anyways we went to Petland today and they had some super almost free
prices......

Neons 39cents each
Flying Fox's 89 cents
Zebra Danio and also Long Fin Danios 19 cents
Black Tetra 39 cents
Tigher Barbs 39 cents
white clouds..29 cents
Velvet and brick red swords...49 cents
golden snails 15 cents
Black Moors.69 cents
Regular Pleco's 39 cents
All small african cichlids. 99 cents
Anacaris 10 cents a bunch
Val.10 cents a bunch
cabomba 10 cents a bunch
Albino or Green corys 59 cents
10 gal all glass aquariums..$4.89
20 gal all glass aquariums $14.89
Small comet goldies.20 for a buck

They were giving away all kinds of full sized containers of various
brands of fish foods, and other products for fish.cycle, plant
fertilizers, amquel, etc etc etc.........each dept had their own array
of freebies.
No telling how many FREE male bettas were given away........along with
a Betta keeping kit that cost $1.00.Buy the kit and the betta was
free............plus they hande dout free bettas to the first 500
customers.

They had an emergency shipment of fish sent in as they lost pretty
well all their initial stock due to a screwup.

We even made out like a bandit on free doggie stuff.....Nutro man was
there hadning out free 5# bags of Nutro.and he basically told us to
get 2 or three for each of our fur balls so thats 2 or 3 times 8.which
amounts ot a substrantial amount of free top quality food.

We bought a total of 50 neons, 25 golden snails and 12 flying fox's
and a dozen swordtails.2 male 10 females...........plus we won two
door prizes as they had drawings every 30 minutes all day
long........got a Fluval 302 canister filter, and a double dish
stainless steel dog feeder / waterer with stainless stand....

While in the store I happened to recognize one clerk who has been
running one of the local mom and pop LFS here. This particular shop
has been in business for over 35+ years........I asked his what he was
doing here working or did "_______" run his butt off finally.....
(Actually the owner of the shop is this guys father inlaw) His reply
was no, the father in law is leaning towards closing up the shop and
hopefully by July he expects to either have agoing out of business
sale or just keep selling what he has and not restocking and let it
peter out. I told him he needs to see if the guy that owns Petsville
may be interested in buying the stock and much to my surprise I was
informed thata Petsville closed its doors and moved out totally this
past Thursday. No sale or anything. Just up and moved the stock to
storage, and pretty well gave away the livestock free of charge to who
ever wanted it. Livestock consisted of mostly hamsters, mice fish both
SW, Pond and FW types, so pretty well if it breathed it was free i fyo
happened to be there at the right time.........I do know he was a bit
low on his usual stock of birds and such......so evidently he was
planning this all the way. The big box stores are slowly putting an
end to the small mom and pop stores, and to see this one shop in
particular probably closing its doors by July is sad, as they have
been a major part of the business in this town........and they were
kind of rarea s they told the truith when it came to keeping fish
etc.they knew what they were talking about.

Goodwill here does not to my knowledge give any discounts to anyone
no matter what their age is..............

Oh we bought one more thing, actually a few more.We bought 2
hamsters, and one of those colored translucent balls you put them in
and let them roll it around on the floor. We also bought a water disha
nd food and some bedding, and put the two of them in a 40 gal aquarium
that is for reptiles or other small critters......The grandson and
daughter wanted a ferret but finally settled on a hamster each. Its a
blast to see that hamster in that ball oroling it all around the floor
while 8 dachshunds are going nuts trying to get that poor
hamster.....The hamster is perfectly safe and its not bothered by the
doxies either........although they seem too roll the ball in a
direction the hamster did not intend to go LOL.......oh and we have 4
liters of doxie pups on the way..early to mid may for the 4 liters is
what we figure....yea I know its not fish related but at least its not
spam or trolling!

I can relate. When I was still working full-time I didn't keep a lot of pets
because of the time factor.

Anyways we went to Petland today and they had some super almost free

(brevity snips)

No telling how many FREE male bettas were given away........along with

Why were they just giving all these things away? Here at Grand Openings
they may have some really good specials but nothing for free.

We bought a total of 50 neons, 25 golden snails and 12 flying fox's

What luck! :-)

The big box stores are slowly putting an
end to the small mom and pop stores, ...........

That's already happened here a few years back. I don't think the new mom &
pop place will make it either. He's off the main drag and has to compete
with PetSupermarket and PetsMart.

.........although they seem too roll the ball in a
direction the hamster did not intend to go LOL.......oh and we have 4

Hamsters are cute. My son had one when he was small. It was addicted to it's
exercise wheel. He also had some white mice but the smell was not pleasant
even though their cage was cleaned every other day or so.

Hi Sandy. I don't ship fish. I deliver within a 30 mile radius, or pick up
only. Sorry.

I love PetsMart. It's by far my favorite chain for fish.

That's the great thing about Hammies...no body oder. That means if ya
keep their cage clean, there's no smell.
Mice, STINK! Their body der is smelly. No matter how clean you keep
their cage, they will smell.
Nothing you can do about it.
Hammies have a special enzyme in their spit, just like cats do,and
when they clean themselves, it makes them oderless.
It's a defense thing in nature.
==============================
That's interesting. :-) After those first mice that was it. We also had
guinea pigs for awhile. They were adorable but their pen had to be cleaned
every day. The smell wasn't bad but those little guys passed more urine than
drunk. :-D

All the mice and rat cages I always had when I was raising them for
snake food smelled awfuly bad even if they were cleaned daily. I used
no bedding at all and fed dog food kibble and corn, and all food
droppings and waste droped out onthe ground, and they still
smelled....

I just found out something that really made my day in regards to the
big box stores. Turns out I went into the LFS that is supposedly going
to close it doors abuot July, and who happens to be a pretty good
frieind of ours.......we have known him forever. He had the store
inthe shopping mall also. ...which turned out to be shut
down...........well rumoprs were flying yet so I asked Gordon what was
what.he told me, he "owns" Petland and its his new venture in his
fight against cheper prices that he oculd not sell at due to his small
limited volume store. Now he has a franchise (petland) and has volume
buying power and is going to give the other big box stores a time of
it. He is going to keep his small store open (over 35 years in the
same spot) but he always had what yuo needed 99% of the time, and can
now also cross fill his stock fromthe Petland store and lower his
prices a good deal. He is going to close u p this small store for a
few days next week while while he revamps and reprices his stock and
then open backup. I am certainly glad to see this fella take a
situation and go head to head with competition with the big concerns
like Petsmart and Petco.......and I wish him well. I know I will
definately support him when I can or when I am ever
around..........especially since now we know Petland is also owned by
the same guy, his son in law and daughter that owened the other small
LFS here...not some big concern out of Arizona like Petsmart of in
Illiniois like Petco.......Already Petco and Petsmart have higher
prices, and today while I was in that area for a dental appointment, a
lot of customers were in Petland and the other two places were pretty
well empty.....................This guy is just an average guy, who
has worked hard at raising up a family of 2 kids and runing and earing
a living all this time in his petshop. He has done great.

I guess its easy to be popular when yuor the only game in town to buy
from. Even though a lot of folks mail order online, there is more that
do not so these big box stores tothem are a gift from above and they
capitolize on it for sure. Initially Petsmart and Deathco here were
much cheaper than the local mom and pop stores............now that
quite a few of the mom and pop stores have closed their doors its
readily apparent that these big box stores have rasied their prices
and are as high as or higher than a lot of the mom and pop stores used
to be.....I'll buy at a mom and pop first if I can if they have what I
need, up to a certain point that is, because I am not going to pay
exhorborant prices, but will pay high prices if it helps. I am just
glad the guy that opened up Petland here decided to take his 35+ years
mom and pop stores and keep em and open the big box store to wage war
with the others. Even though Petland is a franchise etc, at least its
owned by a local fella who is a great guy, and the profits and such
benfit the locals not some corprorate board in another
state.....Petland has large volume buying power, and that is where
they make their profits when the franchised dealers buy from them, and
thats it. Already this fellas one remaining local store has lowered
prices to the point that they match his Petland store and its a first
for a mom and pop store in all reality to undersell the big box
stores...and give people that caring and knowledgeable relationship
between customer and store that big box stores lack!

All the mice and rat cages I always had when I was raising them for
snake food smelled awfuly bad even if they were cleaned daily. I used
no bedding at all and fed dog food kibble and corn, and all food
droppings and waste droped out onthe ground, and they still

Wont he be competing against himself if he has the Petland Franchise and
keeps his small private store? We have a Petland in the other town but the
prices are so high I almost never stop there anymore.

Where I live (TN) PetsMart has the largest stock of both fish and supplies
*AND* the lowest prices on fish supplies. PetSupermarket has by far the
lowest prices but the smallest selection of fish. The Wally Words here no
longer sell fish.

The Petland here is more expensive than the other stores. I can't say that's
true for all their stores. Visit a few and see.

I think it all depends on the area and the competition from other
stores. If they can gouge you they will if they need to lower prices
to get sales they will,. Big box as well as most stores are like that.
For a ong long time the only sal****er dealer here used to really
gouge folks on items to the point it was cheaper even counting gas
price and wear and tear ona vehicle and time to go to the next town
for items. Now he has lots of competition so he has dropped his prices
and they are more in line, but IMHO still higher than what they really
needs to be.............but then again they pretty well match the
other places so they all are working at gouging folks. Shop around and
take advantage of sales and coupons and discounts offered at various
stores and unless your store specific loyal in which case odds are
you'll get gouged. As close as these shops are to each other here its
easy to bump from one to the other in a matter of minutes and but
specific items here and there and save a few bucks inthe process. For
example one has fish on special but filter media is higher, so fish is
bought where its cheaper and filter media is bought where its cheaper
and food is bought where its cheapest.
