View Full Version : # kribensis in 30gallon long? (advice request)

First post -- sorry in advance if this has been talked to death
recently and I've just been too lazy/incompetent to find it in the
archives...
Here's the story:
I have a 30 gallon long, with fairly densely placed rocks/plants, 6
tiger barbs happily dithering away. I'm looking to add cichlids with
the following goals:
-- snug enough quarters that I get to see the exciting territoriality
behaviors, and the barbs can be harassed enough to keep them
schooling, but
-- not so overcrowded that anybody actually gets killed, and
-- ideally I can breed them
Currently, I'm planning to get pelvicachromis pulcher / kribensis,
hopefully a group of six juveniles. Does this sound like it's going
to work?
I'm open to any suggestions, including alternate species if they fit
the above size/behavior criteria.
Thanks in advance for any and all advice!

I had a breeding pair of Kribs in a tank with a dozen Tiger Barbs and they
did breed however none of the fry will likely survive. There were no
aggression problems between the Barbs and the Kribs.

I have two kribs that bred in a 29 gallon("high") tank
with half a dozen mollies and a few lemon tetras
I took the fry away when the parents looked about ready to spawn again
now I have about 50 of them all getting along fine (now in the tank they
were born in, the others were moved to a 3 footer), with about 50 livebearer
fry
the worst the kribs got was to keep the other fish in the upper of the tank.
no deaths or anything.
I've read that they dont get along well with other groups of kribs though if
you wanted a large group maybe an apisto cacatuoides harem or something
would be better for your purposes
in favor of kribs is the fact that they will breed in just about anything
that's wet. the water in the tank they share with the mollies is quite salty
and they seem to be getting along fine.

They sound like Convicts as far as breeding goes.. Get a pair and wet rag
and they will breed..

I've got a 200l tank which has various fish in it, including
tiger barbs and two pairs of kribs. The first pair of kribs try
to breed every month (they don't succeed, I think the bloke must
be infertile) and they give all the fish a really hard time, which
is fine because they are tough enough to ignore it. However this
dominant pair chivvy the other pair quite a lot and get very
territorial with them all the time. There are loads of caves etc
which means that it's not really a problem, but the dominant pair
want to run the entire tank. So I wonder if you'd have that
problem?
