Hi,
I know that Eretmodus cyanostictus is a biparental mouthbrooder, but can
anyone tell me how fertilization actually takes place?

Does it occur before the eggs enter the mouth, or after? Thanks for any help
that you may be able to offer.
Kind Regards,
Rach

The breeding ritual is similar to that of most mouth brooders, without the
circling. Usually on a flat surface, the male moves over the spawning site and
in a slanted position releases his milt. This precedes egg-laying. The female
will then move in, quiver a bit and drop one or two eggs, then immediately pick
them up. The male then quivers again over the same spot and again releases his
milt, but at the same time, the female inhales the milt into her mouth. The eggs
are fertilized inside the females mouth.
The male can be removed to a nursery tank, at night, once he is holding the
fry. In special tanks for breeding Eretmodus, or other Gobies, a balcony is
built onto the tank with some small rocks and a light over it. This creates a
shallow algae covered area that the male can spit the fry into. Their is no fry
care once the male releases the fry. In aquariums, pairs usually mate for life
and defend their territory from others of their species.

Fertilization occurs as the eggs are deposited and in the mouth. These
are said to be bi-parental mouthbrooders sharing incubation, but mine
never did:
