I have added a couple of new photos to the reef section and the cichlid
section. Stop by and take a look, and let me know what you think. I
will be adding breeding photo's of fresh and salt water this weekend, so
stayed tuned. If at any time you see a photo and would like to know how
and what equipment I used drop me a line via e-mail and I will be glad
to let you, free of cost.

the link is actually www.exotic-aquatics.com
my comment is that the pictures are way too large of a file size.

What would you suggest Bob, I am trying to keep the resolution up to
maintain the quality. Any ideas would help.
Thanks

Most people will use photoshop (expensive) or paint shop pro (affordable but
just as good) for this purpose, as well as cropping, and any other cleanup
on the photo that needs to be done. These two softwares are the best for
image editing on windows.
As far as freeware I looked around a little and found this software called
InfranView http://www.irfanview.com/ ... this seems like a pretty cool piece
of image editing software...not as nice as the above ones you pay for
though. On the example I tried on the picture cichlid_baby.jpg I was able
to reduce the image from about 356K to 33K which is less than 10% of the
size with only a very slight degredation in quality...
with nearly no degredation in quality (quality set at 82%) I was able to
obtain an image size of 63K.
none of the images are great for print (photo) quality because of too few
pixels, so since they are mainly only good for the screen why not compress
them.
here is a page that shows three images. the first is 356K then 33K then
64K...I think the difference is hard to tell.
finally resoultion on the images always remains the same...that is pixel
width x pixel height. like 600 x 450 in the case of the cichlid_baby.jpg.
That remains the same under image compression...image compression just
reduces the file size by modifying the actual image.
I highly reccomend paint shop pro, it is easy to learn, professional, and
cheap.

After reduceing them in size and saved them to a new directory you can make
a web page up of the directory with Irfanview with just a few mouse clicks
Open IrfanView.
Open directory of photos.
Go to 'file/thumbnails'.
In the thumbnails window go to 'options/select all'
then to 'file/save selected thumbs as HTML file'.
In the window that opens fill in the boxes as you wish.
Make sure the two boxes below "Image sub-folder" are ticked.
In HTML options set the columns to '6', untick the first box and tick the
next two.
Click on 'Export' and that is it.
You can mess about with the resulting code to get the background color and
links color to suit yorself and to put in any text you want to appear with
the pictures.
To see an example click the link below
http://www.ftscotland.co.uk/gallery/achiltibuie/achiltibuie_thumbnails.html
clicking on a picture brings up another page with the full size picture and
navigation buttons to take you to 'prev' and 'next' or 'thumbnails' to take
you back to the main page.

Thanks Bob, I do have Photo Shop 7 on my computer, and will compress
these pictures for the web.
The originals of these photo's were near 2 megabytes in size. I will be
out most of the day and will give it a try tomorrow if my honey do list
does not grow anymore. :)
Thanks for the help, I'll keep all of you updated with any changes, I
may even try the thumbnail views, then redirect them to another page. I
am no where near the limit on my page size.
I know allot more about breeding and raising fish than I do about web
page development. :(

You must have a _really_ nice digital camera!! mine takes only about 450k
pictures 2.3 megapixles I think it said.

Yes you could say that, I'm kind of a techno junkie, when you take
pictures in raw mode they do tend be be very big. This works well for
macro shots of fish and corals.
Thanks again Bob, hopefully I should be able to get some new one's up
and on the web soon, its just finding time in my day to do this.

Nice photos, but I agree... file size way too big. Takes forever for us poor
people
out in the boonies with dial-up connections.
Also the cichlid section is mis-named as "Reef Photos".
It happens...
