Is it safe to put a standard brown clay pot in a tank?
I see it everywhere on cichlid sites, is this a desireable
thing for the fish to hide/breed in? No chance the clay/additives
could contaminate the water and harm fish?

hey,

I have had clan pots in my cichlid aquarium for about a year or more... no
problem, well there have been problems but it's most likely not the pots.

They are a recommended breeding medium for dwarf cichlids..

I just had to spend a 1/2 hour breaking one apart with vice grips gently, to
remove a fish that got stuck in the drain hole in the bottom.

Hence why most people only use a 1/2 pot.

Sorta like my plecto when he go a rubberband wrapped around his snout.
At least you didn't have to chase the puppy around the tank to perform
the rescue.

what you might want to do to breaka bigger hole is use a scribe to carve out
the desired hole or entrance and then tap within the carving with a hammer
it should just pop out
