I don't know about the purebred cichlids, but Blood Parrots (hybrid) get
this occasionally. If it's the same thing, it can be caused by high ammonia
or just plain stress.. Goes away on it's own... As I said though... very
well may not be the same thing..

I got two cichlids at wal mart today.
One has a black spot and then black veining on its skin.
and the yellow lab sorta has a dirty black look to it.
I didn't see this under the tank lights at wal mart.
It is very noticable under my lights tho.
They are small fish so when they get up near the lights I can see most of
the way through them.
The black stuff appears to be only on the skin and not in the flesh.

Any thoughts on what this may be and what to do about it?

Yeah, I would say they're just a tad stressed from the move, should clear up
as soon as they get used to the new surroundings.
