A friend of mine had called me a while ago. He had sick fish, he
described them and said that he had had a couple of deaths.

I had talked it over with him, suggested a few websites and he had
attempted a few cures ...

He called me up a few days ago and insisted I go by ... the fish were
quite plump, some had redness around the anus ... however, no nematodes
were visible out the anus ... still, I suggested he try levamisole
hydrochloride (I told him not to worry about the brand name.) He soon
exhausted all LFS and such, even animal/livestock feed stores ... (most
amateurs don't recognize this disease, nor how difficult it can to get
rid of once gotten, without the proper meds.)

Finally, he ordered some levamisole powder off the internet, we brewed
it up at the correct dosage from my old notes and he now has his fish
eating and with normal sized bellies, no redness, no whitish feces ...
however, there were a few more mortalities in the mean time ...

I just can't believe levamisole hydrochloride is so hard to locate ...
considering it is one of the few medications useful for the treatment of
worms in fish (actually nematodes.) And, he paid quite nicely for the
few capsules he obtained ...

Anyone know of a cheap source for this medication? Anyone ever tried
Thiabendazole for this disease (I noticed this was easily obtainable,
but I had, had no experience with it?--and, since it was being sold as
cattle wormer, I had no idea on the dosages which would be suitable and
safe ...

Sure do not know where you looked for the stuff, but last I used it it
was readily available even in the local pets / fish shops where I
lived. I have even seen it where I live now, and this place is far
from being a major player in keeping of tropical fish. I probably
have quite a bit of it still back in my old fish room.

Our old ****head Johnnie Smith the penis lover always seems to be the

Tynk:

The generic name is "levamisole", I think pharmacists recognize it by
the name "Ergamisol" (an expensive way to purchase it!, and you need a
prescription.)

The way I have obtained mine, in the past, is just going into a farm and
feed store and getting boluses or capsules containing levamisole
hydrochloride (whatever brand name they slapped on the bottle) and
"brewing my own." (it is sold there as cattle/swine/sheep/fowl worming
medications, of course purchasing a product intended for cattle/pigs is
the cheapest ...)

Frankly, I have never even seen it in a fish store, but only really
looked at fish stores was the first time I needed it. I will look and
ask around in the future, and keep a small supply on hand ...

The caps he purchased over the internet were just called levamisole.

Internal worms in hobby fish are so damned hard to treat because of
the lack of good medication, or rather one that actually works.
I've tried so many times to combat these little freaks, but nothing
ever worked.
Clown Loaches are famous for just wasting away from internal
parasites. I know I've lost so many (over the years) to it that I gave
up even trying.
Same thing with my Peacock Eels.
So if you find anything out, drop a not for sure.
It would be very useful info.
Oh, is there a common name for the med, or like a brand name?

I've not had a problem with any of the loaches I bought from PetsMart. I've
got these plus a red-tail shark loach for several years now.

Yes, I know. When I started out most diseases were either
bacteria/fungus or those "impossible" viruses ...

However, back then, most of us were unaware of the importance of
parasite diseases ...

The remedy I suggested works well for these ... however, I am an old
"fish keeper" from decades past ... perhaps better cures exist today?

But, yes, parasites, internal and external ARE IMPORTANT ...

I am just starting up my "big tanks" so give me a bit here ...

But, I suspect, "dummies" administering incomplete antibiotic's cures,
cures NOT extending for the necessary length of time, UV
sterilizers--either too low powered for the water volume, or improperly
maintained, inadequate strength of antibiotics, or in adequate length of
time administered, etc ... are a significant problem ...

What I will tell you is, I have gotten some "Damn Diseased Fish" from
suppliers ... I think they are basically ignorant for the
reasons/causes and wish to remain so (indeed, they may threaten you life
for bringing it to their attention! -- ignorant *******s!)

If you know fix, post it here, please ... in my humble opinon, these
fools are destroying the exact avenue they have for revenue -- while not
having to go to college to make a living is true face ... crooks raping
dollars are a sure bust!
