Anyone use this filter? I purchased one and I did not take the proprietary
filter media with it.. Anyone have any suggestions for the types of "Bio
Balls" I can use with this filter? It is going on an over stocked Malawi
tank as the new primary filter..The "HOT" tetra tech cannot keep up with so
many fish in the tank...

I have the 2231 and I am using fluval media and it seems to be working fine.
There are no LFS' in my city that even carry Eheim products so I decided to
use the Fluval material since it's almost identical, serves the same purpose
and much cheaper than buying Eheim media from Big Al's.

I know the media would serve the same purpose.. My thoughts were cost
effectiveness.. I think I will do some price checking round town here and
see what I can come up with.. I am certain there are alternatives and if the
fluval media is cheaper I will use it.. Thank you ...

You have several choices... but actually, after pricing the different
options around the net, I chose to go with the effilav which is
lava-rock that has been broken into m-&-m size pieces... you get 5
liters of that from Big Als for only $20 us. That is an effective
mechanical AND biological filter material. It is reusable after a
quick rinse in tank water or even tap water if you don't have to worry
about clorine or cloramines. Anyway, it is almost as good as the
effisubstrat for biological and as good as any medium to large open
pore sponge for the mechanical side. With multiple baskets in the
canister, you can rinse alternate baskets each filter maintenance
period without losing all of your biological filtration.

It works well for me in a Fluval 404 in the bottom baskets and I use
one half of the top basket for bio-max rings that came with the filter
from fluval and the other half either more effilav (lava rock) or any
type of chemical filter media like carbon, or any of the cation/anion
media to change water chemistry (ie water softeners, or nitrate
removers etc) Each time I clean the sponges on the intake side, I
switch the lower baskets order around and rinse the bottom one out
before placing it back in level below my top basket.

A 5 liter box of that material completely filled the 404, with about 2
liters left over... enough to 'replace' a basketful of media once
every 6 months or once every year. I haven't gotten to the point that
I need to replace any media yet though.

My two complaints with the 404 was that I received one of the
mid-versions. Before they modified the handles on the side, so I have
to be careful when I pick it up. Especially with 3 liters of lava
rock, 1 liter of bio-max and 4 liters of water inside the thing!
... and it does seem to be a little noisy. Seems to suck air into the
primer pump that is built into the top and you hear a 'spurt' of
bubbles being blown out every few minutes.

I use hackly cellular rubber in a net-bag. It is cheap and works fine.

If You want to have a biologic filter You need as much surface as
possible in the filter media. So cellular rubber (hackly or with open
pores) or porose stone material is fine.

Lava rock would be a great idea.. I was thinking about the ceramic type
media, but if lava rock works then great.. I can take a trip to WalMart or
even the Home Depot or Lowes to get myself a 5lb bag cheap.. Lava rock is
easy to make into the correct size.
I think I might try some of the Lava rock in some of my aquaclears and see
if maybe they will perform even better.. I presume though, as was suggested
the lava rock should be about the size of Choc M&M's.??

Thanks Gents, your advice is taken respectively...

Tim..

As was mentioned above, anything that provides a large 'surface' area
is acceptable. By breaking the lava rock down into smaller pieces,
you get more of the 'surface' available than if you had larger stones.
Beware though, that A) lava rock from walmart _may_ contain other
ingredients, meaning other mixed minerals in the rock. and B) that it
MUST be rinsed very well before putting it into your tank.

Lava rock will eventually clog up, but since it is stone, you can just
boil it, bleach it and boil it again to get most of the rock 'clean'
for re-use... of course by doing that, you will have killed the
bacteria colonies and you should then treat it as 'new' filter media
not as seasoned/cycled media.

Laguna sells a pretty large pond sized box of prechurned lava rock
you can use, and it's pretty cheap.

I will check that out. I am off to sell of some of my stock to a LFS, and I
will see what I they might have...Most likely though, I will end up at the
hardware store though..
