I presently have a tank full of Red Hump fry several months old. Had a
breeding colony of two males and four females but sold the adults. She is a
mouthbrooder and interesting to watch. I waited until my females were
aggressively chasing the other fish away from her area of the tank and then
removed her to a 10 g tank. When she starts to T bar the other fish it is a
sure sign that she needs to release the fry. Most of mine spit the fry as
soon or very close to putting them in the 10g. Funny to watch the mother at
the first sign of danger suck those fry back into her mouth. After awhile as
they grow she gets more reluctant to do so and they swim around her mouth
trying to get in. My last two breeders kept taking them in until they were
simply too big to fit anymore. At times she would swim around with half a
fry sticking out of her mouth. Nice fish.

wasn't the whole sucking the fry back in the mouth depicted in the Jewel of
the Rift video??? Seems like I saw that somewhere in that video.... It was
pretty cool....
