Any suggestions on who would carry petrified wood? I am looking to
redecorate the tank with petrified wood and will need a few hundred pounds
worth. Unfortunately, none of the landscape and stone supply places I
called carry the stuff. The only LFS that carries petrified wood has a very
limited amount.
Thanks in advance.

I'd check for a rock shop, or lapidary shop, in your area. I don't
know where your area is, but I'd use the Yahoo yellow pages for this
sort of search.

Thanks for the suggestion. There is one rock shop in the area. I will try
them in the morning.

Are you sure you want petrified wood and not just dried out stuff? The
reason I ask is because petrified wood is extremely heavy, and you'll
rarely find it in large chunks - at a price most normal people can
afford anyway.
I have a piece of 2"x5" petrified wood and it weighs in at about 4lbs.

I did mean petrified wood but I am revising my plans quickly, that is for
sure. I currently have a couple hundred pounds of rock work in my tank. It
is all different kinds of inert rocks like slate and river stones that I
picked up from a pond supply place for quite cheap. I am looking to change
it out and saw that the petrified wood provided a cool affect and it sounded
neat looking through the archives (groups.google.com). Unfortunately, the
places I found selling the petrified wood are selling the smaller pieces
that are very ornate and expensive (like they should go on a book shelf or
something). I was hoping to find the lower quality stuff that are mainly
hunks of silica that look sort of, kind of reminiscent of wood. I am not
sure what my new plan is but I will probably revisit using simple lava rock
or flag stones up the back glass. I also thought it might be cool to use
all obsidian in the tank. I think the black glassy look might make my
fishies color really stand out while giving the tank a general mystical
eerie look.

Lava rock, flag stone, or limestone would be a good choice. The bonus
with limestone (the "swiss cheese" limestone) is that it will act as a
buffer.
Personally, I grabbed some rocks used for a retaining wall from a
local golf course. They are just reddish looking hunks of rock. While
not exactly the right look for a malawi setup, it will do the trick
until I find some nice pieces of limestone.
As for the obsidian, I suppose it's up to you on how close to reality
you want the tank to look. The only thing I'd caution is that the
glare from the lights off the obsidian might confuse your fish, as
well, most hunks of obsidian I've seen have very sharp edges, which
may cause havoc.
Here's what I do use to make my fish colors stand out. For the first
bulb, I use a 25w actinic lamp (like a Hagen Marine Glo or
alternative). The second bulb is a regular 30W T-12 "Home Depot" cool
white lamp. This helps offset the extreme blue of the the Marine Glo.
Add that with a medium/dark blue background, and the colors on my
jewels and yellow labs just stick right out. At the same time, the
amount of lighting offers my cichlids some shade around the rocks.
Send me an email and I'll show you a picture.
