Hello,
I have a 180 litre tank, approx 16" front to back, 18" high.
It currently houses 2 Blue Acaras, 5 Buenos Aires Tetras and a Bristlenose
plec.
I spotted some young Jewel cichlids in a local shop, and am very tempted.
I know they are aggressive, but I figure they are smaller than the Acaras,
and possibly too slow to catch the Tetras.
Does this make sense, or will a bloodbath be the result?!
If it came to it, I would be prepared to give the Tetras away in order to
get the Jewels, would this help the situation?
By the way, I am thinking on getting 2 or 3 of the Jewels.
Regards,
Richard.

I've had jewels for the past week, so I'm by no means an expert. What
I can tell you is that I'm very surprised your tetras and the acaras
actually live together. Then again, I've never seen peaceful acars.

In any case, I wouldn't say the jewels will be fine with the tetras
because they are slow. Jewels are by no means slow - as a matter of
fact, my jewels can keep up with my mbuna, and thats quite a feat.

As for temperment. I've read web sites that say jewels are super
agressive, and some that say they are somewhat peaceful. All I can
tell you is that my 2 males are about as tempered as my mbuna -
generally grumpy but not violent except when it's feeding time.

Now, if you manage to get 2 males and a female, chances are your
female will become a snack if she isn't interested in breeding. For
this reason, I'd say go with 3 females. They are very hard to sex
though.

Relatively peaceful to heterospecifics (other species), but quite
agressive to conspecifics (same species) - so rather like mbuna -
until they breed. Then, super agressive!
