Well folks, it finally arrived today and got it up in snap.. I will give it
a few weeks before I comment about the water qaulity being the same or
better.. I snaged a bag of Lava rock and let it soak/rinse for the last
couple of days By this weekend I might be pulling the filter apart and
adding some lava rock media... This unit was larger than the one the LFS
stocked and cheaper too.. ( ah well it was only PETsMART that carries them
around these parts, so it is not going to hurt the Mom and Pop stores any..)
Yes, under observation from here and other NG's I put the filter in a 5
gallon bucket to make sure the seal didn't leak around the top, although it
apeared to be lubed up when I inspected the unit.. I think the Malawi's are
going to like it...

Hope it works out well for you. I have a 2231 that I'll be transferring
from my 27G to my 40G. Nice, quiet, efficient, easy-to-use canister filter.

I actually like both types. But I will say that the Eheim Eccos are so
quiet that unless you check the outlet pipe or actually put your hand on the
canister you'd never know it was on. My Aqua clear makes far more noise,
but then I guess that's the splashing of the water. I'm sure you'll be
happy with the Eheim.

BTW, they have excellent posts-sale service. For example, I bought mine in
Europe, brought it to Canada and planned on using it with a voltage
transformer. I bought mine new for around 30 Euros, which at the time was
equal to US$30. Got it from a shop closing out. Well, I had a problem with
a leak near the top, sent it to Eheim North America and they decided to
replaced the entire top portion of the canister. They did not charge me
anything! Plus instead of fixing the Europe rated motor, they decided to
replace the entire top half of the canister with a new North American rated
motor, etc., all for free! Can't beat that type of service! Thus, they
have a lifetime customer.

Yeah it was a great customer service experience. Strange that you can hear
the Ecco running I can't. Maybe it's because your model is larger than the
2231 I have.

I can hear the thing humming away. Perhaps a little break in time may
quiet the thing down.. I can hear the hum, it might also help if I had a
cabinent to place the thing in as well.. No worse though than the AC 402
power head though...

That's not my experience ;-(

I have had an Ecco 2235 for a few months now and am not happy with it.
It makes a noticeable noise at all times. I found the lid a real pain to
get back on, often only to find it slipping off again an hour later.

Lousy filter IME.
