View Full Version : My son's goldfish aquarium is making me crazy! Help!

My 14-yea-old son has a five-gallon tank with six goldfish in it. They're growing, so I know we need a larger tank. However, here is my question, and I really need some help here! The water is usually murky, and his dad and I think he's over feeding them. When he's gone, such as on a recent trip, we did not feed them as much, and the water cleared up. He refuses to accept this logic, so I thought I'd find some expert help! We even took away the food to monitor it, and he fed bread to the fish.
I am desperately in need of advice on how often goldfish should be fed, and how much.
Thank you!

too many fish for tank size
too little filtration
too much food
food too low quality
temp too low, needs 76-78oF
if the nitrates are not kept at or below 20 ppm the fish will start to develop
disease.

Somewhere between zone 5 and 6 tucked along the shore of Lake Michigan
on the council grounds of the Fox, Mascouten, Potawatomi, and Winnebago
