Hi,
My last goldfish fantail died after living for a good 7 years. I kept
it in a large 100 litre tank. (The rest of its companions perished a
year ago). The tank measures 70cm x 40cm x 40cm (25inch x 15i x 15i
roughly)
I kept the tank empty for a few days then went and decided to buy some
replacement stock.
I've been using the Eheim Professional 2222 filter.
Admitedly I've not been doing enough water changes so I sucked up the
crap in the tank and did about a 70% water change. Boy, the tank was
dirty. The PH was very acidic. I also replaced the foam filter in the
Eheim with a new one - and replaced some of the secondary substrata
pebbles in the Eheim with some old ones I had an unused 2222 filter
kept in storage.
Later, I bought 7 small fantails and put them into the tank. After
some initial settling in problems - the fish seemed to like the place.
They did seem to hover near the surface of the tank tho. So I put in
two air pumps - air stone and the black snake looking thing to aerate
the water. All good.
On the second day, I found an old Bio Super Booster container which is
suppose to contain "aerobic bacteria for clearer water/healthier fish"
- the instructions were to put the mix into a pouch and put it in the
tank at a set temperature of 25C and left it inside for a day. (Its
distrbuted by Biotech Restoration P/L) I bought it about 6 years ago.
The instructions read Use 1 gm to a 30/120litre tank. Its also suppose
to have a long shelf life.
I used it before in the past and it seemed to work magnificently.
My tank temperature was set at 21C tho.
I didn't have a pouch so I wrapped it up in a (new) kitchen paper
towel (unbleached) and put it in the tank overnight.
The next morning - the waters were slightly cloudy and half of the
goldfishes looked like they've been to hell. Three of them looked
blind. The fins were whitish. And they were sitting at the bottom of
the tank or floating near the surface.
I immediately removed the pouch and threw it away and did changed 20
litres of water.
The fish are swimming around now.
What else should I do now? Should I
1. Change the Eheim filter pebbles?
2. Do more water changes?
I checked the Nitrate and Ammonia and both are perfect. Haven checked
the PH yet tho because I ran out of the tester.
