I recently purchased some victorians, I cannot find much info on them at
all, wondering if anyone could help. They are Paralabidacromis sp. half
crimson tides which I think has been renamed to haplochromis half crimson
and Astatotilapis sp. 44 which we hope are the haplochromis zebra
obliquedens. can anyone confirm or deny?
Thanks a bunch

Kelly,
You can try posting your question on my forum at www.amateurcichlids.com as
Kevin Bauman, a hobbyist who keeps and researches a lot of Victorians pops in
there occassionally. You may also have better luck at www.cichlid-forum.com .
There forum has a few thousand members, and there's a chance one or two may have
the information you're looking for. Kevin also frequents that forum. I've not
seen him real active on the newsgroups lately.

!! I've been looking for those for a looooooooooooooong time!!

astatotilapia (latifasciata) sp. 44 used to be named zebra obliquidens, but
now they're no longer labeled as that...wow...you're so lucky to have gotten
these!!

wow... I was drowning in those for the last couple of years! I had a trio
that was breeding constantly.. I finally got rid of the juveniles at the
last couple of auctions and sold the parents too.

Excellent! I have 6, so hopefully will get a pair :) Why did you ever get
rid of them? Aren't they from Lake Victoria and dwindling in #'s in the wild
thanks to the nile perch? I'm trying to get my hands on as many victorians
as I can :)

How are your new fish doing Kelly? I checked out the link in this post and
they look awesome. Why don't you post some pics on our society site
http://mas.gotdns.com/index.php ? I'd like to see your new fish.

I've just started reading this post and I'm not sure exactly which Victorian
everyone is discussing.

Haplochromis species #44 is the vic that is commonly (and incorrectly)
called the Haplochromis obliquidens.

Astatotilapia latifasciata is the vic that is commonly called the zebra
obliquidens.

One particular color of Paralabidochromis sp "rock kribensis" is the vic
commonly called the Hap "half-crimson"

One particular color of Pundamilia nyererei is the vic commonly called the
crimson tide.

Thanks Kevin, They are only juvi's yet, so its hard to tell. I ordered what
were labelled Astatotilapia sp. 44 and Paralabidochromis sp. half crimson
tides. And I recieved a adult male zebra obliquiden from a friend. Hard to
find any info on them!
But I believe my half crimson tides are the rock krib Kenya's and the zebra
obliquiden in my 90g is the same as yours (which I was hoping the sp. 44
would be to mate him, but the guy I got him from is trying to breed them, so
I'll just be patient :) and glad to have 3 species of victorians now) The
new 44's are still very small, don't suppose you have a pic of those? yeah I
know, it would be on the site ;) I'll send ya a pic of mine when they get
bigger. Nice site, they are such gorgeous fish

Yea, the hap 44's are on my site. They are sometimes called Hap thickskin
or Hap red tail (http://www.african-cichlid.com/Thickskin.htm). They are
unfortunately the most cross-bred victorian around and that has lead to a
lot of confusion. My young male has passed away and the LFS has a bunch of
cross-breeds for sale so I can't find a good replacement. The Hap 44 males
will be mostly yellow when they are young and will develop the red as they
mature. If they are (somewhat?) pure they should have either 5 or 7
stripes.

I have about 50 Astatotilapia latifasciata fry that are growing out. Now if
you lived near Columbus instead of the great white north, I'd give you all
you wanted for free. They are so common around here, their market value
isn't much.

I do have a picture of the half crimson that isn't very good so I didn't put
it on my site. They are basically white with very prominent black
checkerboard pattern. The males develop the red "belly" at a fairly young
age.

I've never had the crimson tide but all the Pundamilia's are a very
aggressive bunch.

Coo loo coo coo, coo coo coo coo
Coo loo coo coo, coo coo coo coo great white north indeed :)
Yay, yes those juvi's look exactly like mine :) Thickskins it is. If its
though the body, they have 5 stripes, 2 on the head, so hopefully they are
somewhat pure :) Thanks for the info, and I do believe the labelled half
crimson tides are the rock krib kenya, 2 males and 1 female. Thanks so much
Kelly
