Lonely Geophagus Jurupari?

I know some cichlids don't mind being the odd man out while some prefer the
company of their own species. Which category do Geo's fit into? I used to
have 2 but one died a while back. The remaining fish seems content to move
all my gravel around all by his (her?) lonesome. Should I get another one?

And if it is better to have more, are they picky about whether they're male
or female? 'Cause honestly, if they don't have a sign saying 'I'm a boy' I
have no idea.. And from what I've read, Geos are hard to sex anyway.

Hasn't the scientific name be changed to satan something or other? I
have Jurupari in a tank by himself, and he doesn't really seem to mind. I
used to put him in the pond in the summer, but that came to an end quickly
because it took so long to catch him.

Hello,

The current scientific name is Satanoperca jurupari. According to
my book on South American eartheaters, all members of this genus are
best kept in groups. However, my experience is that they do okay as
individuals if need be. But the optimal would be to purchase
several more with, assuming the size of your tank permits this.
Also, it would be preferable to have some type of small grained
gravel or coarse sand so your fish can sift this through their gill
rakers -- a behavior that is unique to this type of fish and very
natural to them.

so many of these fish are changing names it is hard to keep up with. We
recently had Lee Newman ( expert on Demon fish) attend and make a
presentation at our Aquarium Society. Quite interesting to know that many
changes in the fish names are the result of someone getting a Government
grant to study and reclassify the species.

Thanks for the input Meph (and everyone else!). Currently my tank would
overcrowd if I added more (fish fit a growth spurt recently) so I won't be
adding them til I upgrade. Right now the substrate is smaller gravel but I
was actually considering half sand/gravel for the future tank.. I was
worried the Jurupari wouldn't like the sand but from what you're saying it
should be fine.. Good to know. :)
