a fish store about 150 miles from here sells these and the lady at the
phone told me that a couple of these fish would be suitable for shell
dweller-like small tanks like 50 litres.
is there anyone here with experience with these fish in small tanks?

50 liters is a bit on the small side, although probably doable. You wouldn't
want more than a pair of these fish in a tank that size and no tank mates. More
than volume, a tank that was at least 75cm in length would be nice for these
fish. I've kept them happily in a 20G long tank, which would be about 75 liters
and 75 to 76 cm in length.
