View Full Version : Help, black flecks on goldfish :(

Hi, one of my goldfish seems to be having a few problems. I noticed
yesterday that he had some black flecks on his side. I tested the water
for pH, ammonia, nitrate, nitrites, etc, and the levels were all good.

I did a half water change last night, and just checked him again...
there are more black flecks on his body, a few on his fins and he is
sitting on the bottom of the tank and breathing hard.

He is not clamping his fins, and is still swimming about when the mood
takes him, but he quickly returns to the bottom of the tank.

I'm pretty worried, can anyone tell me what's going on? The only things
I can find are about ammonia burns, and black spot disease.

Thanks, Jo

I suppose you can ignore this now. He died.

Thanks, he was a cute lil feller. Keeping an eye on his tankmate, but he
seems fine.

So sorry to hear this. I really don't have any experience with the
black flecks, but it sounds like the disease progressed rather
rapidly.

I think from first noticing the spots (about 5 of them) to the time he
died, was about 48 hours. He seemed perfectly fine before, and the first
24 hours he had a few spots, but was behaving normally.

The night before he died, he was sitting at the bottom of the tank
gasping very rapidly. He tried to eat, but kept spitting the food out
(probably because it's hard to breathe and eat at the same time).

Next morning, he was laying on the bottom of the tank, left side up, and
he appeared to have a swelling/slight bump behind the gill on his left
side. Not sure what it was, but I think maybe he had an infection there.
A small bright red streak was poking out from behind one scale.
I have no idea what it was, I've been lucky enough not to have had a
*really* sick fish before now.
