you dont want the bacteria to die, you need the bacteria and it needs food

Sounds like a clear-cut case of "new tank syndrome" to me.
See http://faq.thekrib.com/begin-cycling.html
for all the gory details. You don't want the bacteria to "die"
rather you want it to find a home. Read that article!

Check out a product by Marineland called "Bio-Spira" not
available online, only at some LFSs.

OK..finally have some tank stats for y'all:

Ammonia: 1.0 (person at pet store found .5)
ph: 8.4 (7.8 in store)
Nitrate: 20
Nitrite: 0
Hardness: 300
Alkalinity: 300

(Any reason for the discrepancies? Which one should I go by?)

So, basically my water is crap right now. I've put in "ph decreaser," I plan to
change 25% of the water tomorrow, and add Amquel+. Any other suggestions? I
don't remember my water being so bad when I had a fish tank before. :(

your pH is fine. leave it alone. that is nitrite that is 20 correct? just keep
changing water until that ammonia ad nitrites are barely detectable. Ingrid
