I once found a link in this NG about the S.A.E.
It was at
http://www.bettastarz.com/sae.htm
Anybody know of a similar article.
It discussed how to tell a TRUE SAE apart from many other fish that are
similar.

I found the table info in the section titled "Distinguishing
features", to be pretty helpful.
Kind of the same info, but with good pic's
http://www.malawicichlidhomepage.com/other/crossocheilous_siamensis.htm
My LFS sells SAE's labeled as Flying Foxes.
I guess the females would be flying Vixen :)
bettastarz.com home page indicates the page is "temporarily
disabled".
Hope it's nothing serious.

Thank you pausto, I have seen "flying foxes" before and even have two of

I'll keep looking, thanks!

Fortunately I have both Flying Fox and SAE in my tank and now I can tell
them apart very easily. The two things that are the easiest to spot are the
dark stripe down the side of both fish. The line stops on the body of the
FF before the tail and in the SAE the stripe goes all the way through to the
end of the tail. Also the SAEs have a barble on each side of their head
above the corners of their mouths. FF does not have barbles.
HTH?

Hi Mort . . . :)
You can get true SAE's at: www.aquariumfish.net. I bought four about a
month ago and they are doing well in my tank. AquariumFish Net is based
out of San Diego, and they got my order to me all the way to Ohio. I
also ordered seven panda cory cats at the same time and they made the
journey as well. :)
Their SAE page:

Hope this Helps! :)

My local PetSmart has SAEs labeled as flying foxes for $2.99 each!
My tank isn't set up yet, so I asked how long they would be in stock.
The lady said that they can be ordered at that price any time between
January and May. Now, I don't know if this salesperson had any clue
at all or if she was just giving me an answer to get me to go away.
At any rate, you may want to check out your local PetSmart.
