It will add calcium and carbonates, raising both the GH and KH. The
main downside to using coral chips is that it's not easy to control
how much it raises the GH and KH.

At just about any health-food store, you can buy a very large
container of calcium carbonate powder very cheap. It dissolves very
easily, and lets you add exactly the amount you desire.

I use the little jars that Petco sells to sprinkle on your lizards food. I
've a 2.5 oz. jar for over a year that's still more than half full - but I
don't need much.
