View Full Version : Rams Problem

My Rams saga continues ;-)
My 100gallon planted tank with cardinals and 20 Amano shrimps.
Week ago introducing 8 Rams -> Amano shrimps are missing.
Today - One dead Ram and another one infected with bubble-eye. - Removed to
isolation.
Other Rams are happy as it seems for now - no other stress signs observed.
I know that this is caused by the build up of toxic gases that enter the eye
shell, but my water are fine with normal readings of all parameters.
Is there a way to treat this. (Only once I was able to cure one fish with an
5% Argyrol solution - but I think it is an old remedy these days.
Suggestions ???

I can only say this about Rams, they suck... I love, absolutely LOVE them,
but they suck... They are the hardest fish I've EVER, EVER tried to keep
alive... I'll give them maybe a month, then they develop popeye, some fungus
or just up and die...

If I ever have a chance, I'd love another crack at them, but until I find a
place that can get and keep them for any length of time, I"m over Rams...

I've seen them around here just recently, but wondered if they'd fair the
same way....

Of course there are those who will disagree, just as there are those who can
breed Discus in conditions resembling Lake Tanganyika, but Rams are soft, acidic
water fish. They seem a bit harder to aclimate than most. It breaks my heart
when I go to the local wholesaler and see 200 tanks of moderately healthy fish
plus 5 tanks of dead rams floatin in our local rock-hard water.

Most fish can be aclimated, but Rams seem to need more TLC during aclimation.

Dave, right on the money there. I would even go as far as acclimating them
as do the marine guys. A long and tedious process but the fish will benefit
greatly.

Red, you need to assess the state of your LFS's tanks. I would say the
biggest culprit would be water quality. The rams probably go into osmotic
shock and then over the next few days/weeks slowly dwindle away. In my my
part of the woods Rams are pretty expensive so acclimating them slowly was
the way to go for me. You could also try Bolivian Rams, not as colourful but
also an equally wonderful fish. I bought 6 and one died ;( The rest are
thriving in my tank, a much hardier species IMO. hth

Most of the blue rams I got were online purchases, and it was my mistake by
getting them from the same place twice...

Bubble eye Ram died... (At least when it was quarantined)
I have still 6 left - One is itching all the time...go figure what this is
;-)
The 'big' issue today was that I was able to see one Amano shrimp but it
disappear after a short while....
Maybe they are still hiding some place...
As for the Rams they are locally grown in HARD water.... imported Rams would
survive in my tank only for about a week....
