Hi,
I was referred to this discussion for an answer to my question. I have
a planted 55gal tank with Cabomba, Java Fern, Rotalla Macrandra,
Hydrophilia Polysperma, and Anacharis. I also have Black Skirt Tetras,
Gold Barbs, Cherry Barbs, Rosy Barbs, Neon Zebras (glowfish), Brilliant
Rasboras, Scissortail Rasboras, Red Tail Sharks, Cory Cat, Spotted
Pictus Cat, and a Plecostomus. I recently removed the Tin Foil Barbs
that I had because they were constantly eating the plants. I just
decided to plant my tank and the plants have only been in for around a
month.
I am currently trying to nurse all the plants back to good health, and
since I have removed the tin foil barbs they seem to be doing much better.
I have a CO2 setup with a 5# bottle, and bubble counter feeding into my
filter.
I was told by a friend that now that my tank is planted and I am using
the CO2 that when I do a water change that I should stop using the
AMQUEL and NOVAQUA that I had been adding to the tank. Is this true?
Also, any other advice to a newbie to the planted tank world would be
greatly appreciated.
Thanks

AHHH...macranda,makes me wish I still had a tank set up..but soon I
shall,,anyway to get to your question..I used amaquell for years, and I
never had a problem with it,as far as locking up any ferts.I used it by
itself and never had to use anything else..
My opinion is to just keep using it.I had planted tanks for years and
never noticed it being a detriment in any way, shape,or form..

I would like to reinterate about using the amaquell by itself, and say
that you probably do not need to use the novaqua..I rrealize that waters
are different everywhere,so you may need too. But,the one thing I know is
that in the fish hobby,it can get very expensive.and if you can keep
from buying something which you really dont need then thats great...more
money to spend on fish and plants..LOL
what I would reccomend if you dont already have them are a few of
the water test kits like iron, phospate,KH hardness, and even nitrate
kit,,these kits will let you "see" whats going on in your system.they
are a bit expensive at first, but I feel they are well worth it...I even
bought an o2 test kit one time, just to see what my levels were in my
tanks..

If he's implying that you don't need to use anything to neutralize chlorine
or chloramine, he's wrong. CO2 does not affect chlorine or chloramine in
any way.

Well, unless you are doing 5% water changes, I would certainly use
Amquel or seachem Prime as directed on any treated tap water using
Chloramines or chlorine.
