View Full Version : Persistant bacterial infection....

First off I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Andrew and I have been
keeping goldfish and tropical fish for a little over a year now.I finally
got around to setting up my news reader and emmediately found groups
regarding fishkeeping among others interests.
Anyways...I have a female pearl scale who for the past few months has
been plagued by tiny bloody spots on her body. The spots seem to fade and
reappear at random. They don't seem to be affecting her other than the fact
that she is not growing as fast as my other goldfish. She eats well and isn't
lathargic.
I have tried every remedy I could find and nothing seems to
help...antibiotics,salt baths,melafix,etc.
My water conditions are good as far as pH,ammonia, nitrite and nitrate
are concerned.I don't imagine she can last indefinitely in this state....the
infection is bound to win out sooner or later.
Has anyone here had similar experiences? If so how did you fare in
finding a cure?
Any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thankyou,
Andrew

if it definitely is bacterial you could try
raising the temperature of the tank a little
and see if that will help.
Also do daily water changes to try and flush out the
bacteria from the water for at least a week.
That would be my suggestion if you have tried everything
else.

Folks have been reporting excellent results with Antibac Bath- said to be
the best thing other than antibiotic injections for persistant bacterial
infections.

That's a good question.
My bottle does not list ingredients- clear capsules containing a *very*
bright chartreuse colored powder.

pearls are notoriously touchy about water quality.... and minerals
http://users.megapathdsl.net/~solo/puregold/care/care3.htm#PEARL
they need very low nitrates, less than 20 ppm and extremely good aeration to move the
ammonia away from their body. Ingrid

you use meds without knowing what they are?
http://www.dermstore.com/product_Antibac+Protection_1189.htm says antibac is a
facial scrub containing behenyl alcohol, Cyclomethicone, and Lysozyme.
OTOH, http://www.skybright.co.nz/products/health/antibac_spray.html says the spray is
HYDROGEN PEROXIDE H2O2 WITH COLLOIDAL SILVER Ag+
the "ponddoc" doesnt say what is in it.
now somebody on Puregold said it was nitrofurazone... so maybe there are two things
with same name?????
nitrofurazone is an old antibiotic type treatment
According to Noga: "Nifurpirinol is a nitrofuran. Some are stable in both freshwater
and sal****er and are rapidly absorbed by fish. Unfortunately, nitrofurans are
carcinogenic, genotoxic and mutagenic and are strictly illegal for use on fish in
some countries, including the United States. Nitrofurans are photosensitive and may
be inactivated in bright light. Catfish, loaches and other scaleless fish are
considered sensitive to water-borne nitrofurans, but this varies with species." I
think the ban is only for food fish. Given the genotoxicity, it would not be wise to
use on fish that are breeders. "

Ornamental fish have benifitted from life saving drugs in that family for
decades. Goldfish especially have been positive in treatments with the family.
They are not illegal or banned.
If you went to all the trouble to search, you would have found furanace, known
as the "Silver Bullet of Aquaculture" and a host of other like meds. Why would
you leave out all the positives? It seems your competitors have advanced the
hobby and sell stuff that works.

I already have tried raising the water temp with no positive results and I
tore down the tank just three weeks ago when I moved so I would think the
water should be cear of any harmful bacteria....
If it isn't bacterial what could it be?Viral?I dont see any signs of
parasites.

Thanks for the link...Very informative.
I had no idea about calcium and pottasium.I'll have to look into
supplimenting.
I use salt religiously and my water straight from the tap is pH 7.5 so no
worries there...
