View Full Version : recurrent popeye

I have an oranda who developed popeye in one eye a couple of weeks ago and I
assumed he had just knocked it because it was only the one eye and it healed
within 48 hours with no medication at all. Then a week after that had
healed, he developed popeye in both eyes. This time I treated with
Interpet's anti internal bacteria medication (I'm in the UK) and within a
couple of days of treating it went away again. It then happened again and I
treated with the same medication and it disappeared. However now I have
noticed popeye developing again this afternoon.
My water parameters are perfect (ammonia/nitrite 0, nitrate 5) and my tank
is adequately stocked (over 10 gallons per fish). I do two 25% water changes
a week and they are fed a varied and good quality diet. No other fish have
shown the same symptoms.
I'm at a loss as to what to do now. Other than the bagel type bulges around
his eyes he seems perfectly healthy. He is active, his colour is bright,
he's eating as usual and seems happy.
Is there anything that would cause recurrent popeye like this and what can I
do about it?

Well, I didn't treat with meds as I have been doing and just let him be last
night. This morning when I got up the bulges appear to be gone. Why on earth
would this happen?

very, very weird, but it doesnt sound like popeye. are you matching the temp of the
new water to the temp in the tank? Ingrid

Yes I always temperature match my water. It has me mystified! Someone on
another site where I posted a query about this said perhaps it was because
of too much oxygen in the water? Whether this could be a cause I don't know
but I have turned down the venturi system I have today to see if the problem
reoccurs again.
He gets the bagel type white rings around his eyes and these get pretty big,
but the actual eye always looks ok and doesn't protrude at all. Perhaps it's
not popeye but I'm at a loss as to what else to call it!! lol
Anyone got any other ideas?
Mel.

not too much oxygen, but if the venturi is under pressure it could put nitrogen into
the water under pressure and this can cause gas bubble disease. you would see this
in teh fins as little bubbles. I dont think so, tho. not a clue. Ingrid

What's up Doc?

The last time I bought gf pellets was SIX years ago. Yes, it was a large
bag. I have since lost my contact info for Moores in Ontario and can't
find them anywhere on the Internet. Can you help me?

Thanks Tom

What do you mean by "real" moors? Was just curious. I've been attracted to
telescope eyes lately, and found a few red/black and calico ones in LFS.
Moors are usually considered the black Telescopes, aren't they?

real moors are long bodied and have long finnage and never fade. they have bronze on
the belly under the black. demekins have silver and eventually decolorize.
